My Hunter 93 Passage 42 was blown off its jack stands last weekend visibly damaging my keel and rudder. I am looking to get both replaced. If anyone knows of possible sources I would appreciate any input. As we find more issues will be asking for more help.

Did you call your insurance company?

Are you planning to do the work yourself or have a yard do it? If you are going with a yard, the yard should be able to find what you need. Be forewarned, the insurance company will not want to replace the keel if there is any possibility of repairing it. Keels are really expensive.

Yard will do the work, wing on keel bent 40 degrees and not sure it can be bent out to work. I am just trying to see if I can speed up the process

I went through the same problem, boat blown off its jack stands. It wasn't fun and it took for ever. Boat went over in February, it was late June or July by the time I got it back.

Contact the SBO store. The owner used to work for Hunter and the store may be able to help.

Might want to go and delete the other two duplicate threats
They're gone now. In the future if anyone sees a duplicate thread please use the "Report" option at the bottom of the first post and indicate it is a duplicate. This will alert the mods to take care of it. Reporting duplicate threads has no negative consequences for the poster.

Is the rudder shaft stainless steel and is it bent? The original manufacturer of the rudder is still in Florida. It is Foss Foam. They have the original molds and can make you a rudder on your shaft if it is not bent (much cheaper) or can supply a new rudder on a new shaft. You may need a new steering quadrant too. @JamesG161 has a lot of experience in this as do I. I had mine rebuilt on my existing shaft and installed it last spring.

Foss Foam can be reached at 352-529-1104
website is newrudders.com
Their address is

@smokey73 identified who made the rudders for hunter.

Mars Metals casted the keels for Hunter and they are located in Canada. They have the molds.

it would help if you could take photos of the keel for us to look at. Probably it is lead and will be difficult to bend back
if you have marine insurance on the boat, i would wait for the marine surveyor unless you only have liability.
How many jackstands did the marina use and were they chained together?

Thank you for all the responses. The rudder has an easy solution, the keel is another matter. I am having Mars Metal look at photos and advise if it can be bent out

Ditto on what Smokey 73 said. Had to replace my keel on an 87 Legend 37. I was paying for it myself and did some searching. Foss Foam Products of Florida, INC. Don't know if they are still around but you can call and check. 352-529-1104 was the number then. I dropped it off and picked it up so I saved shipping. They stripped my rudder down to the skeleton and built it from there. They had a bunch of molds for different styles. I think they might have made the original. At the time the cost was just under $1400. If the insurance is paying good for you. If you want to prod them along, give them the number (if it is still good)
I took mine off at haulout, painted it with barrier coat and put it back on at next season's launch. No extra fees because it was in the sling anyhow.

Foss has already sent me the quote and I appreciate your feedback. The keel is the big mystery now. Waiting on Mars Metal, If they can not bend it back I will be looking for any abandoned P42s '90-'97 or H43s '91-'94 (same keel)

The boat yard repaired mine with heat and some pounding.

Since it is Lead/Antimony, they used PPE, but done very well.

Jim...
Lead is soft. With heat and patience, the yard should be able to bend it back into place. Getting it perfect may be a challenge, but perfect is for the race teams. Are you Cruising or racing? Another solution may be to remove the small wings on both sides. There isn't much weight there. Our '08 Hunter 38 doesn't have them, while our '97 376 did. Maybe show Hunter and ask how important they are?

@JamesG161 :cowbell:Looks like dimples on a golf ball. Maybe you are onto something? Whoever has a towing tank out there needs to experiment with this. You could apply for a patent. I see big bucks from the uber rich racing teams in my crystal ball.

In all seriousness. They have experimented with stuff like this and "riblets" too. See the Sailing Anarchy discussion. If you dimple a hull like a golf ball, will it reduce drag?

Well even @SailorShaggy slightly Starboard Bent Wing might help against "Prop Walk"

Facts I learned from Hunter Experts about my bent wings.

1) Weight of the Keel is needed to keep the Gunnels out of the water on a beam reach. [7700 lbs]
2) Shape is for sailing with minimum Drag [Like the golf ball]
3) Wings were designed by Hunter Naval Architect. Called shoal draft. Deep draft keels have no Wings.
4) Once the wings are reshaped, you fill the dimples with a fairing compound. Then use Bottom Paint.

The bent wings BEFORE picture in my post #7 above.

Even though the keel bottom has not been painted yet [guess why not], my now picture.

My repair yard can contact your yard on the "How to Fix the Lead Keel" ;)
