I think I meant to ask if anything was missing or changed. I kinda assumed something was taken off cause I wouldn't have thought extra hardware would have come on a Hunter. Do new sailboats have extra stuff like this? The only thing I can think that is actually missing is reefing equipment.

That is possible. It may also be that when the boat was launched the rigging was at the end of the boom. Here is an image of a 2016 H31. It looks like the rig is end boom.

Maybe it's cheaper for the factory to churn out one boom, then the installation crew just sets it up for the particular model. I do like that setup. I don't see that conversion happening on my boat tho. Even if it were a free project, I can't sacrifice the headroom.

Back to topic here. Attached is a pic of the Hobie jib sheet rout. It has a seperate port and starboard jib sheet just like big boats, but it only uses one line (the control ends are effectively tied together). I'd like to do this for the main. That way there is half the length of slack line in the cockpit. It works on the hobe because port and starboard controls are completely separate. Would this be possible with both sides using the same purchase system (like the main has)? The only way I can think to do it is to figure out how to splice the line so it's just one big loop.

The idea is that it never matters which side of the boat the main is controlled from.

I feel I am missing something.
Your mainsheet only has a single control line. You can run it to where ever you choose. Many desire the additional trim control of a "traveler" but it is not necessary to sail your boat.

Conceptually you could use a similar arrangement to your Hobie design, that moves the rig on the traveler. This just lets the main be controlled on the traveler.

The traveler moves the boom connection laterally across the boat based on the length of the traveler. It lets you better trim the mainsail.

Sorry, I was referencing converting it to using cabintop winches. If a winch on both sides is used, there's the possibility of having all the sheet being run to one side. Then I'd have to pull it back through the system to even it out.

That is a lot of extra blocks and the physics is not working to your advantage.

Here is a harken system that is simple. 4:1 power. A single main sheet.

You could add to your trim control by attaching lines to pull the traveler back and forth on the track to better control the boom position.

Or...
5:1 with Dedicated Winch
This system is popular on cruising boats with cabintop travelers. The sheet leads forward to the gooseneck and then down and back to a winch on the aft edge of the cabintop.

The designs make more sense in my experience. The individual blocks or winch can be any manufacture you choose.

I'm going to set it up like that in the near future to try it out. I'm entertaining the dual setup to help facilitate a higher degree of lethargy.

Is a condition for Power Boaters.
Sailing engages the energy of the sailor. When they sit down Mother Nature provides a gust to scare them up and off their cushy seats.
