Usually forward of the keel and off set. Depth and speed next to each other. Sole hatch access from inside.

You may be viewing the GPS speed and not even have a speed transducer. GPS speed is really all you need.

As Terry stated, forward of the keel and access is through the flooring in the cabin. Here is a photo of my 2000 340. (Sorry, the Knot Indicator didn‘t get in the picture when I took it)
You may be looking at the plugs that you “should” have when you look under the boat. And not the actual Depth and Speed (knot) indicators. Knot sensor will be a small paddle wheel. They each should be attached to a wire under the flooring.
Hope this helps you out.

I wouldn't spend a lot of time searching for it as you are in sea water (salt water). The paddles are continuously being jammed with tiny threadlike growth which stops them from moving.

I have cleaned them up a few times when going on a long trip and the boat is moving every day. They stay clean that way. If they sit for more than a few days without moving, they're stuck.

Around these precincts it is always helpful to have both speed through the water as well as speed over ground. That gives you the tide current effect when making passage. Both have equal value.

I used transducer bottom paint on mine and am trying to build a habit of swapping with the blanking plug when not sailing.

In hilton head in the summer the critters just look at the paint and go "oooo yummy".

Yeah, I think it's best practice to put the blank in when the boat is idle.
