Water filter clarification...

I used a filter like the one you show, on my new to me boat for about 6 months. It was readily available and not expensive. It was when I tried to clean it I realized it was not appropriate to the purpose. The plastic was degrading due to saltwater exposure and temperature. I removed it, tossed it.

I installed a Groco ARG-750 . Substantial construction able to take the boat conditions of near freezing waters and simple to maintain. Now in it's 7th year of service without any issues.

Cleaning from the top. Filter basket slips up and out. Hand tightened cap. No leaks.you can drain the jar using the bottom plug.

Oh, and going back to the "filter". I've always seen instructions that show the strainer mounted in a vertical orientation, with the bowl on the bottom. I agree with @Captain Larry-DH ... the "filter" being substituted for a strainer and not mounted properly could be a problem.

Yep, the basics ... proper equipment and installations ... (have you heard that the "thumbs up" emoji is hostile according to Gen Z? Should we continue to use it or cancel?

I am not a believer in the cancel culture BS.
I am not triggered nor frightened seeking safe space when I see it.
I hope as some point they will all grow up.
The world outside their bubble really doesn't care.

I'm not familiar with this system (as David explained it) at all. I have no idea what is your purpose for showing that hose that is obviously cut or damaged somehow.

The hose with one end not connected is in fact used for winterization. Turn the valve (red handle) to by pass strainer, not having to unplug anything

A failed impeller sometimes has no obvious defects. I've replaced several failed impellers in my smaller diesel that seems like it has been a long road so far and perhaps it is time for a mechanic's fresh eyes to resolve this issue.

I’ll change in spring to be on the safe side

More tests today
instead of running back and forth between the engine compartment and the stern to look at the exhaust, I decided to disconnect the return hose and see if water was coming out, with of course the strainer in a bucket of water.
I also decided to prime the strainer, which I wasn’t doing yesterday.
Result: plenty of water was coming out of the return hose which led Me to close the case. Until I got home and realized I maybe should have tried to reconnect the return hose to see if water was coming out…. and if not, I would know there was a blockage somewhere…

Good that water is going as far as the recirculating line. That’s good troubleshooting to narrow the problem down.

A raw water cooled engine should still not get as hot as what you’re seeing though, and once warm you should have more water out the exhaust than your video showed. You may want to check your thermostat in a pot of hot water to see if it’s opening properly.

BTW I noticed that the hose between the strainer and the pump is too big for the intake pump. 3/4IN when the pump is 3/8”. This couldn’t be a perfectly sealed connection.
and the water pump seal, behind the front plate, is super old and thin….
Ill fix and see how it helps. Can’t hurt anyway

nice but a little pricey for me. But I would absolutely like to not only replace but also upgrade the 100% plastic strainer I currently have
ill see if I can find something in between

I’ve used the Vetus intake strainers. Good quality, and middle price Vetus FTR140 Series Cooling Water Strainer
