Hello all:
The boatyard marina where we have been tenants for the last four years has quoted me a price of $1,926 for a haul out and bottom job for our MacGregor 25. Salt water bay in Northern/Central California.
Does this seem about right?
Thanks.

Well, it depends on what they call a bottom job. Exactly what does this entail? What kind of paint? How many coats? How extensive is the prep work?

By comparison, my 36 foot boat had a "bottom job" that consisted of a light sanding and applying 2 gallons of paint. It was about $1600 for the paint and another $600 for the haul, block and launch. This was done in Marathon FL last February.

Barrier coat was done 3.5 years ago, so they won’t do that. They’ll use ZSpar Black paint and this includes haul out and re- sling launching. No mention of any sanding.
Thank you for quick response.

That's way too much. Get a couple more quotes. Do you have a trailer? You can do it yourself. Pay a diver to wipe the bottom down a day or so before you plan to take out of the water. For comparison, the yard next to my marina in Mission Bay, San Diego. (Driscoll) charged me $1000 for my Cat 27, same service, and that included an extra lay day. Look around, do your homework.

Curtent price....one coat hard paint $1498 plus $250 for second coat including haul out, pressure wash, tape, sanding, materials less sales tax at Berkeley Marine Center in the SF Bay.

I paid a little over $2k for our 25' in Long Beach, CA in April 2021. I did have a little grinding and fairing done (very little) so that added, with all the taxes and fees, another $700. That was for double coat and triple at the waterline.

P.S. that included close to 10 days on the hard between scheduling issues on their part and then mine later, no charge

It's certainly within the ballpark for NorCal. And where else are you gonna go? Your options are pretty limited in Monterey.

I’m getting quite a range of pricing from those of you who have been kind enough to take the time to respond. The feedback has shown me that there are unique factors that influence every reason why, or why not, we pay for what we get. If I were thirty years younger I would be taking on much of the labor issues myself (provided I would have ready access to equipment needed). Unfortunately, I’m no longer young enough to commit to such a task and the boatyard would never allow do it yourselfers to borrow or rent equipment on their premises due to liability reasons anyway.
What I have gleaned from your answers I’ve received is that I must find out exactly what I will receive for the amount of money the boatyard will charge me. As many of you know is, to a certain extent, we marina tenants are a captive audience and are primarily at their boatyard’s mercy. Thank you, again, for your comments.

You always have the option to sail your boat to a marina at Moss Landing or Santa Cruz and hire a boat contactor to paint your bottom to save some $$.

Clearly you've never prepped and painted a boat bottom before. If you had, you'd know that $2K to have professionals do it is money well spent
For a bigger boat, yeah. But for a smaller 25' boat that's a lot of money.
