Marine Beam sells a replacement LED bulb, they are cheap. I will look for the part number (or mail you my spares). I am replacing my masthead fixture because I only have 1 volt of amperage up there during troubleshooting. There is a splice up top under the masthead crane and un accessible (a four flat conductor wire goes up my mast Hull (216 2003) with two for deck light and steaming half way and ground and anchor at top) and another joint at the base of the mast. You cant do anything with the wires but replace the bulb without pulling the mast. I put a pull rope in last time I pulled the mast, So I will pull a new wire and replace the fixture shortly

I think they made the wire connection for masthead light underneath before placing the masthead crane on top of the mast, so you cannot pull the wires that feed the existing fixture up far enough to make a splice. There were some corroded spade connectors on the fixture which my lightweight crew could not pull loose with pliers and had to cut them.

They likely made the connections with the mast laying on mast holder in the yard. The mast head was not attached to the mast. They placed the light on the mast head. Picked up the wires from inside the mast attached them to the light. May have fitted restraints to the wires. Then put the mast head on the mast with wires in side. Once all secure they lifted the mast and stuck it back on your boat.

It is difficult to do this hanging 40ft in the air. It is pretty simple standing on the ground with the mast laying about 4.5 ft off the ground on a set of stands.

As far as lights, I would be inclined to use an LED fixture with LED bulb. Plenty of light - very low power consumption.

The biggest draw on my batteries overnight, besides the fridge, is the filament anchor light. An LED type light would draw a minuscule amount of amps compared to the filament type. I have a new LED lamp on hand to install this season. Be aware that just changing the bulb to LED does not meet Coast Guard requirements.

I pulled down a new wire and replaced mine with a Hella Marine white NaviLED 360 2LT 980 960-0-xxx. Meets COL REG 72/USCG 33CFR 183.810 2NM/ABYC A-16. The bulb is built in (non-replaceable), but has a 5 year warrantee and clamed 12,000 hour service life before recommended replacement. I recon that is at least another 15 years, which is longer than the OEM incandescent lasted.
Photo shows failed attempt to pull wire down existing hole where wind sensor wire enters mast and I had installed a pull rope after I bought boat in 2006 and had to pull mast to untangle internal haylards

I am curious as to why an LED bulb would not meet coast guard requirements?

Some of the early ones were not visible at the required distance based on vessel length. Most of the new ones probably do, but buyer beware.

We have put LED bulbs in all but steaming light as the engine is running when that is on, all meet colregs and are very bright.

We got them from Cruisingsolutions.com -Brad and SBO has them also

I believe it has to do with the fact the lamp was not tested with LED. There was a discussion previously on this forum about this and the fact that it could be a problem with insurance coverage if there is an accident. Probably just a technicality, but best to be aware.
