1977 O'Day 27. 1st Sailboat ever.

I am the proud new owner of a 1977 O'Day 27. I am the 4th owner of Sail5 after the prior owner having owner the boat for the past 25 years. I am a totally green sailor. I have no experience aboard a vessel under sail. I am an expert sea kayaker/ex guide with extensive paddle knowledge of the entire Puget sound. Life circumstances have allowed me to chase this dream going forward. Pleasure to be here with you all.

Congrats. She looks nice. I had a 1975 O'Day 27 as my first owned boat. She was an excellent boat to learn on. Do you have the Atomic 4 engine?

More pics to come as I finalized the deal then had to leave town until next weekend when I'll be back for a proper christening.
Sail5 is turn-key. The prior owner was pretty meticulous in routine maintenance and having the boat sail ready.
Also the prior owner has offered sailing lessons from his partner who is/was an instructor at the wooden boat institute in Pt.Townsend. I've been studying sailing and maritime history for years and with my cockpit experience in a sea kayak I'm ready to go.
Plan is to start small, learn from the prior owners offer of instruction. With some trial and error, one sail at a time until I'm competent, then sail her extensively thru the sound and maybe more someday. More to come,

Welcome aboard! Congratulations on taking the next step in purchasing your new boat & learning to sail. Great to hear that Sail5 is in Bristol condition; you can spend your available time learning to sail & enjoying the boat without without the hassles of refurbishing a boat! Nice that previous owners are willing to spend some time with you teaching sailing basics; that should be extremely helpful as you will learn on your own boat. Also, have them review all the onboard systems and routine maintenance that’s required. Have fun!

You're about to become a very busy person, 'cuz if you've never owned a "cabin" boat before, you also have some systems--fresh water, sanitation, an engine/fuel system and both AC and DC electrical -- that you need to learn how to operate and maintain. None of it is rocket science, but never again will you be able to say you have nothing to do!

Congrats on your new boat!

Lots to learn (and probably lots to fix), but hopefully in small increments so you can also get out and sail some!

Sailing is best learned by experience in my opinion, as I was self-taught on my first boat (Hunter 280) about 11 years ago. If you find some fellow sailors to sail with (or better invite them on your boat), it can help shorten the learning curve.

Lots of great info on this site, reading can give you a head start on trouble-shooting problems.

No dumb questions on the forum, you are among friends.

Sail5 is basically turn-key ready to sail. All systems are working and the boat is squeaky clean below and topside. The prior owner was a top notch boat owner in regards to maintaining every system on the boat.
My dad and my papa are/were masters of the used vehicle. They new how to spot a diamond in the rough and taught me that skill as well. Finding this boat was like finding a mint 57 Chevy owned by a grandma who garages it and took care of it like a child. Love was not lacking in Sail5's life and I could see that from the moment I toured it and then more so when I met the prior owner. I'm going to take them up on the offer of teaching me to sail her and learn her systems under sail.
