Repair or replace muffler without hauling boat?

I overheated my Yanmar 2GM and the exhaust hose started leaking. After replacing the rather old exhaust hose the muffler inlet fitting is leaking when the engine is running. It looks like inlet fitting has become crushed a bit. There is a crack on the fitting that runs inline with the hose starting about 1cm inside the hose.

Is it possible to repair or replace one of these without hauling the boat? I just remember that there is a thru-hull under it but am not familiar with how these systems work. See attached photos.

Cheers!

Yup. Buy another just like that one and go ahead and change it out. Close the raw water intake valve and ya should be fine. The lack of seawater did not cool the exhaust so it melted parts of the hose and the muffler. Inspect the exhaust hose downstream of the muffler too . You will get some water as you open the hoses, but it will be less than a gallon.

I recently replaced my exhaust hoses and muffler while the boat was in the water. Very little water came in. The aft end of the exhaust hose is well above the water line.

Gotcha! Funny, I always thought these had a thru-hull under them. Looking back my assumption in the original post here was wrong about there being a thru-hull. Also looks like these are somewhat repairable if you can find a tube to fit, or just repair with epoxy putty...

Your boat - your choice. But that's not a choice I would make outside of a temporary "get me home" situation...

This happened on my wakeboard boat. I ground down the area, jammed a plastic bottle in the opening and glasses it back up. It was a lot easier than removing being it was a duel exhaust muffler and it was very accessible. Been working great for 3-4 years.

Here is where I'm at with MarineTex: Will sand to smooth once cured and see how it goes.

What’s the cost for a new muffler? The plastic has been overheated & more brittle. Likely to break again.

Cool. For me the challenge was making sure you could get the hose back on?
Could be hard. Could be impossible. We'll certainly see...

New mufler, less than two boat bucks. (Cheap)

Good job on making a tube but I’m sure you can find fiberglass tubes in different dimensions that would fit your hose specifically. However, I’m with BigEasy on this fix. With the heat and vibration this part will be suspect for any leaking you may find and you may miss a more serious issue, or worse have a full bilge when running from a storm. If all bandaids worked, you wouldn’t see them in public showers.

You are also putting yourself at risk of death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Exhaust leaking into your boat has potential to kill you.
Boat might sink and kill him too. Better just stay home on the couch?
