Hi Folks,
Our Hunter 306 has a lead keel which has always been a mess as far as keeping bottom paint on. We epoxy coated it back in 2006 or so, but the paint has always come off in half-dollar sized chunks. I know about the copper/lead electrolysis business, which may have caused some of the problems in past years, but I switched to the non-copper-based Petit Hydrocoat Eco in 2016. Still have problems, but of course, the new paint is going on old, badly adhered stuff.
Anyway, this year, I'm in the middle of taking the keel down to bare metal. My question is: is it worth the extra trouble to coat with epoxy before bottom paint, or can I get away with the non-copper paint directly on the lead. I've read that paint directly on the metal has worked for some. Petit recommends their epoxy as an undercoat, so I'm leaning towards that. What do you say? Anyone have direct personal experience with non-copper paint on lead?
Jay
