Link for the video of GBCA Rum Race #8 on Galveston Bay. Really fun downwind leg starts at about 7:40. About forty boats racing, clips from cameras on a Hunter 340 and Hunter 40.
That is awesome video! I would love to film a race like that. I would have probably have sat it out, though. I’ve been caught out on the bay in some bad stuff, but if it’s blowing over 30 knots and I’m still at the dock, I usually won’t leave the dock. What amounts to our local season ender - the Gearbuster- was last weekend. More than eighty boats in ten classes. Here's a shot of one boat shortly after the start. They're headed out to a lighthouse about 24 miles away, and back.
If that's the trend it's probably best to quit while you're ahead...Our season, such as it was, ended last Sunday... Just in time too as I threw my back out tacking the jib... 6 races scheduled, 5 happened, two firsts, a second and a third...
True enoughIf that's the trend it's probably best to quit while you're ahead...
Beautiful picture @Jackdaw . Christmas card stuff but it’s only October. We're got two weeks left; our final 'Commodore Cup' distance race this weekend, and then the Frostbite Cup the weekend after. Hopefully most of this will be gone by them.

First time on this boat for three crew, other was only third time, and they all did great. Start wasn't the best, we hardened up around the first mark and didn't tack till we had to at the Houston Ship Channel, automatic DSQ if you enter it or even look like you did.Going downwind, catching up to Hobgoblin, would it have been possible to get directly to windward of him and steal his air?
Rookie mistakes...forgiven! I love Boston tunes. Should have dubbed this over the video...no one would possibly care about the mis-queues in your action videos with action music. We made a lot of mistakes and they cost us, could have easily been first in class. Here’s the link to the video.
Okay, risking sounding like a total idiot, what are reaching sheets? How are they different from "normal" sheets? For the jib or for the A-sail?Oh. make some reaching sheets for those fetching legs. MUCH faster when reaching!
Looks like I'll be in TX all November. Jodi is teaching remotely, so we pulled BlueJ yesterday and are heading for Canyon Lake on Friday. Will sail there, with buddies in Austin, and also visit my buddy JB in Clear lake!

What boat does JB race? Several of my crew do Wednesday nights on the lake and others are big in J's and other fleets and clubs.
Thanks, both races were fun.Nice going! Glad to see fewer people In the cockpit. Looks like it works. Have you had the bottom cleaned recently?
