Thanks for the responses guys. Here is a picture of the plate on the mast, and some more of the carnage :wahwah: My boat is insured through USAA - which subs Progressive. I'll let you know how it goes. She's out of the marina now and back on the trailer. The mast was pinned and 90% up but we noticed a stay was crooked (on the port side, right over the line stopper for the jib halyard). As we crawled up to see how we were going to address it, tragedy struck.

Many lessons learned on this one. Here are a few for anyone that stumbles across this and needs my very expensive 1 hour of wisdom...

1. Step the mast before you get in the water
2. Use the winch as a failsafe for the jib halyard.
3. Use break away ties to keep things in place as the mast goes up (we used to do this when we sling loaded things under helicopters in the army, and I should have known to do this from the start)

And probably:
4. The irony in the term "stays" is palpable. Those things seem to do anything but stay in one spot as the mast goes up...
Just checking in to see how you are doing. :)

Looks like you are getting a handle of what the damage is and if I understand the photos correctly it’s limited to the gin pole, the reinforced area of the mast where that pole fits and I guess a little deformation of the sail “slot” in the picture with the spreaders.

Maybe there is more but it probably could have been much worse.

If you get the replacement parts from Phil and Dave and either fix it yourself or have a competent rigger help you I’m sure you will find yourself out in the water with your captain in no time!!

Can you categorize your pictures in a know how to do regarding repairs and post it like you did with replacing centerboard line. I will call later this week what is going on and how things are going with you. Are you coming to the lake this summer?

I'm finding some peace with what happened. You all have been so helpful, I feel I owe it to you guys to stop crying in my beer (I gave myself 24 hours) and concentrate on how to get her back in the water. First thing tomorrow I'll be on the horn with Progressive/USAA. I'm also on a boatyard search tomorrow to figure out what is near me in the winter wasteland that is MN.

It also appears that some ASA courses are firing up again in select areas in MN. While the boat is repaired I'm going to find a way to get some education. Tuition at the school of hard knocks seems a bit steep.

Update;

Mast hit hard with other damage; thus a new mast is warranted.. Waiting on photos of base of aft mast carrier for any damage at the base where attached to the transom. Mast carrier bent along with port lower shroud need replacing. Waiting on picutres of upper shrouds and also turnbuckles to see if damaged. Owner found a rigger whom I have talked with and wants my help. He asked how much and I said no charge as I am only helping. will keep you posted.
