Catalina 22 #5481 Budget Restoration

Hello everyone!

I acquired a 1977 Catalina 22 #5481 swing keel with pop top. The previous owner had stripped most of the hardware, hatches, etc, off the boat and I am in the process of getting her cleaned up and put back together. So far I have the following questions:

1) The wood trim around the companionway has been removed (both interior and exterior). These parts did not come with the boat. I am looking for the dimensions/angles etc. so I can make new ones. Also, how are these attached? Are they thru-bolted? With what type of screw/bolt/etc.?

2) The wood rails on each side of the sliding cabin top are missing and were not included with the boat. Also looking for dimensions of these and how they are attached.

3) The wood grab rails on the cabin top are missing and were not included with the boat. Looking for dimensions of these and how they are attached.

Sliding hatch rails and grab rails are attached with wood screws from inside the cabin. Companionway trim is through bolted.

Unless you have a good table saw and a lot of patience, it might be easier in the long run to buy these particular parts. The earlier owner of my boat re-did all the exterior teak out of tan starboard, and I gather it almost drove him to insanity getting everything tweaked up correctly. He had a full woodshop, and I think he regretted it when he realized all the hours it took. In the end it did look great though. If you check Ebay, a lot of times it's possible to find good replacements from parted out C22s. Welcome to the forum & best of luck however you decide.

Budget as in my goal is to get sailing ASAP with spending as little as possible to make the boat appealing to the rest of the family. The boat was purchased for $600. The hull is in great shape except for one small impact area well above the waterline that needs repair. The mainsail is in great shape. The jib looks almost brand new. The cushions are original with no mold/mildew/odor issues. Came with a pop-top cover. Other than some missing minor parts it just needs a good cleaning and everything put back together. Many photos to follow.

The guy that runs Key Lime Sailing Club in Key Largo has a small fleet of C-22s sitting in a bone yard behind his house. Get in touch with him. He will probably be your best source for used parts.

I have been doing little projects here and there on the boat and have a bunch of new questions.
1. The mast step has two eyes (one on fore and one aft). I believe this is the original style? Anyways, the aft loop is bent down past horizontal so the mast step will not even seat properly on the deck. I removed the machine bolt holding the mast step in place and it was bent. Not sure what happened. Also, there is a bunch of black goopy adhesive under the mast plate that needs to be removed. Several questions issues here. Other than the loop being bent down, the mast step looks to be in good condition. I am considering hammering the loop up to its normal angle. Advisable or no? Should I buy the new mast step from CD? I am also wondering on the adhesive to use under the mast step. I have heard 4200 but it looks like CD includes 5200 adhesive in there kit. I would rather not use 5200. What's recommended? Also, I am considering buying the halyard plate. Am I right to say that the halyard plate would have the adhesive between it and the hull and no adhesive between the halyard plate and the mast step?

2. The rub rail has been removed from the boat. There are hundreds of small holes along the hull/deck joint where the rub rail was attached. I am not spending the money on the correct rub rail. I am leaning toward an automotive body adhesive trim strip for cost savings. Do I need to fill these hundreds of holes? Will there be water intrusion anywhere through these holes or are they just into the fiberglass?

3. My boat came with the pop-top and cover. The snaps on the boats have all been removed and are in a baggy. They are rusted so bad they are barely identifiable. They are the screw in type. Is there any adhesive or epoxy that needs to be put in the holes before the new snaps are screwed into the deck? Or butyl tape?

4. My boat does not have a traveler car. I read somewhere the older boats did not have the car. Can someone direct me to a photo of the original set up? Every one I see online has the traveler car. Should I just get the traveler car?

5. There is a block on the bow deck just behind the running lights. Any ideas what this was used for?

All this is my opinion.....
1. Check the area under the mast base for softness delamination and voids. If the base bolt is bent something bad caused it. Investigate the surrounding area if all is well the sure hammer away, but for my money I would get a new base and base plate with the side block rings.

2. Fill the holes with marine Tex or thickened epoxy. Any ingress of water only opens the door for problems later

3. Proper way fill and retap screws, use butyl. cheap way make sure screws seat well and use butyl.

4. The old way was friction stops and shackle the main to the bar between em. Get a traveler.

#1 Butyl tape, Sikaflex 291, Boatlife caulk.

#2 I would definitely put something in those holes. Sikaflex 291 would be my first choice, followed by Boatlife caulk, and others. NOT some bullcrap $7 silicone from Home Depot.

#3 Any of the above sealants for those snaps. For which you can get shiny new ones fairly cheap, might be worth the money.

If budget is the primary driver, you could try E-Bay or similar sites. You might also look or post on Sailboat Owners.com looking for available parts. Sometimes, guys purchase old boats for parts and make some parts available on line. We probably all have parts lying around from upgrades and spares. Deep down every sailor is probably a hoarder. I have an old set of the 5 loop cabin-top handrails, in teak. The companionway trim is do-able if you have tools, patience and materials. You could do them in plastic (Cat Direct sells these as an option to teak).

If I install the halyard plate under the mast step, the halyard plate is glued to the deck with Sikaflex (or equiv) and the actual mast step is only bolted down on top of that - correct? No adhesive between the mast step and the halyard plate?

I am going to order the white foam gasket for the pop top hatch and forward hatch from CD. Are there any cheaper alternatives to this? Also, I need to replace the gasket on on the cockpit seat hatches. Do I use the same material for these?

#5 could be for the spinnaker pole downhaul. My C22 is setup for spinnaker and that's where it is on mine.
