Bringing joy to an old man ...

@Scott T-Bird ,

As an 18 year old kid, I can say that it's every young sailor's dream to buy a boat and sail away to the Bahamas or something with their girlfriend! Granted, your daughter is more than likely older than me, but that's so awesome that her and her boyfriend are thinking of taking on that opportunity! My girlfriend and I (almost been together for a year now) have bonded a whole lot on the water, and she enjoys racing just as well as cruising! A girl who's willing to explore her boyfriend's world is something really special! :)
Well, they are starting off on lakes in Montana, so we'll have to see where this leads. It's more like her finding somebody to keep up with her world and contribute to the lifestyle. Right now, Linda is an ocean lover living north of Cabo on the Pacific. She'll spend the next month or so surfing before she migrates north again to Montana for the summer. Boyfriend is from Nantucket, so he must have sailing in his blood, but he seems happy in the mountains. I'm thinking La Paz will be a jumping off point if it ever comes to that but first step is a trailer-sailer in the mountains. Linda has 2 vacation homes now (her ski resort pad and her surfing pad in Mexico) and somehow she makes ends meet while she continues to travel. She has spent a lot of time in Thailand and some time surfing and learning yoga in Indonesia. She recently fell in love with Greece. I can see her wanderlust as a natural progression into sailing, but it has taken longer than I would have expected ... probably because her primary home base is in the mountains and there are so many land-based adventures. But she does seek the water on a regular basis.

Still, we are talking a commitment as big as marriage and potentially as messy if it doesn't work out. :poke:

What are you trying to say, Simon? :doh: I mean, might you want to rephrase that or are you going to let Scott make of it what he will? :stir:.

Well I doubt an 18 year old girl would leave the home and go living in Cabo with her boyfriend, haha. Wasn't trying to say anything disrespectful or weird!

You must have some level of incomprehension about independent women ;). They don't necessarily go anywhere with a man. My daughter travels the world and has her own residences completely independent from any relationship. She just chooses to participate in boat ownership with her boyfriend in this case. He's in Montana readying the sailboat (I suppose) and working. She is in Mexico taking her off-season break and surfing for the time being.

Ohh, HAH! That clears a lot up; sorry, I got confused! That's really awesome, though; I hope to do some traveling myself one day (by sail, of course)!

Umm well that’s not entirely true

I met my girlfriend at 18 in my senior year of High School in Southern California. At the time I was already living on my own aboard a 31 foot motor sailor in a marina. We dated for 2 years until she started college and then she moved onboard with me when she was 19. We continued dating for a number of years while she was in school and even purchased a different boat to live on that better suited our needs both for cruising and living on board. We eventually married, had kids, moved ashore etc. but it all started with a teenage boy living out his dream! Now after more than 12 years of marriage with 3 young boys I get to teach them the art of sailing. My only hope is that they don't put me through what I put my parents through! :doh:

@Scott T-Bird it sounds like your daughter is embarking on a great new adventure in sailing!

Yes, I'm hoping. I think it's worthwhile.
Of course I'm also poking fun at Simon. :waycool: There is a lot to learn when you are just 18! Those of us who follow S/V Delos know that Josje joined the crew in Fiji when she was just 18.
