I agree with you Scott, as far as I care they can blow the bridges and tunnels to the crummy apple.
Well to each their own I guess... I love visiting New York City, go there all the time. I feel NYC is one of the amazing cities of the world. For sure, there are times I want peace and quiet and to be just in nature, probably part of the reason I love sailing. But when I want all that cities offer, NYC is definitely one of the best!

I'm already planning a sailing trip around Manhattan in June with my small trailerable boat. I'll drop it into the Hudson river under the George Washington bridge and head down and around Manhattan. Should be a nice day sail!

Nice plan for a sail. Went through NY harbor last year. How do plan to deal with the Harlem River?

It will really depend upon weather. I may just go down the Hudson into the harbor bay region and then run the tide back up the Hudson and take back out at the GWB. I have never done this before, quite looking forward to it. What advice can you give me on the Harlem River?

I'll be doing this trip in my Windrider 17, a small trimaran - I can actually drop my mast at any point and put it back up by hand. I wouldn't necessarily need to rely on the bridges. I wasn't originally planning to circumnavigate the island (although I did use the word around - I meant it more in the sense of "in the vicinity of" rather than actually circumnavigating the island), mainly just run down from the GWB, play in the bay, and head back up the Hudson to take back out. The sights of the city from the water must be seen!

But the thought of going all the way around is intriguing. If the wind is right, I should be timing the tides correctly to actually do the circumnavigation.. Food for thought... I'll consider it. Nice question...

You’d need a wind and a prayer ;-)
It could be done but the current would play a big role, and bridges and fast moving marine traffic. I would encourage you to explore the Hudson and NY Harbor, and the areas below the Brooklyn Bridge (e.g. Buttermilk Channel, Governors Island, Liberty Island). But there are more challenges heading north into the closer quarters and faster currents in the East and Harlem Rivers, especially without aux power.

I would indeed have to run with the currents. But I do have aux power. While a small sailboat, it does have an outboard that can be used to drive it. I typically only use it to go in and out of launch ramps, but it can be used to run for longer distances, such as up the East River and across the Harlem river... :)

However, that being said, I don't have much desire to go across the Harlem river. It does not look particularly conducive to sailing. I know I'd just run that through under motor and I don't have a lot of desire to do so. I believe the areas you've pointed out make for a much nicer day of sailing. I don't have any need to run up the East River. I've walked along the walkways watching large motor boats running at pretty decent cruise speeds and I've almost walked with them. They had not been going with the current. It was quite impressive. But... It might be a nice challenge! ;)

In Chicago, we are still pretty cold, and had some snow flurries last week.

I pulled this toy out of storage this weekend, more to do with not wanting to pay another months storage than because the weather was so nice...

But, I bought my bottom paint and it looks like 60-degrees next weekend! So, time to get ready to splash...finally:clap:

No snow in South Carolina.... So I thought sure... When asked by my friend. Lets play golf... Never knew about local hazards on the course.

An easy par 3 just 130 across the water. So I hit the ball in the sand trap. As I approached the trap I just happened to glance at the water 6 feet away....

John,

No worries, they are moving slow this time of year. But you don't find those in the Pacific North West waters!

We've melted most of our snow here, only a few snow banks left. Weather is still darned cold. I was hoping to start finishing up working on my Hunter starting this coming weekend but the weather is still going to be down close to freezing up on Champlain. Maybe by the third weekend of April I'll be able to get up there and work. No crocs up there either, just a lot of cold weather...

It was 75 yesterday. Woke and it was 39 this am. It has warmed up to about 50, but there is still a chilling wind out of the north.

Hear that the conditions back home have been flirting with the weather in the NE. I’ll need to reinstall my diesel heater before I untie the lines for the May 1st cruise.
DJ hope the weather god hears you please lets you get started on prep for the coming (maybe:laugh:) sailing season.

Went down and spent the night on the boat Friday. Went to sleep with a light mist of freezing drizzle and some snow mixed in.

Woke up to 2-3” of snow over a thin layer of ice.

I had to clear snow out of my cockpit so I could work in the aft stowage areas this weekend. We hit record lows. This is just not right!

Another morning with snow showers! Today I saw a Bald Eagle on my drive to work! It was standing in the shallows of the Lamington River looking upstream as I was driving through the woods alongside the river going downstream with the snow drifting down between the gap in the trees. What a great surprise! I was talking on the phone when I saw it and got all excited. I had to back-up for a second look (I can do that because my commute is traffic-free and I rarely see any cars on this stretch of road). When I got back alongside, the eagle flew off upstream. I guess I was disturbing the fishing. Trout season must be open.

OK, the snow can stop now. I'm headed back north this afternoon.

Here's a photo of my boat in the marina beneath a couple of inches of snow. (Actually it is a screenshot from the marina webcam.) Taken about 5 minutes ago. :(

So sorry for your snowy luck Dave (and all in the NE). We are continuing to enjoy the chilly weather in SC. Rain yesterday. Sight seeing today, Brookgreen Gardens. Hopefully by Friday the weather in the PacNW will turn favorable and inviting.

Most of the migrating waterfowl have left our lake. It was odd though to see many American pelicans and ducks at a small pond alongside the highway between the lake and the city. The Spring weather has been on a roller coaster. Shorts, then snow and ice, then expected 80s, then back to the 40s. It's okay though. I have two large projects to finish before we go into the water.
