Did you 'shield' the connections at all? I believe all these very low current transmission wires have shielding to minimize interference from spurious emissions.I spliced mine to the existing wires leading to the panel using 26 gauge heat-shrink butt connectors.
Uh..... that's how you figure the current.... a comparison between SOG and STW.I originally had a paddle wheel but, eventually abandoned it in place. It used to crap up alot.
I use my chartplotter for SOG for exact readings.
After all, paddle wheels can be influenced by current direction if strong enough.
It's just not accurate.
Its a silicon based lubricant, its very popular here in preference to other lubs. Then I read silicon spray, what is it that you are using?
As promised here is what I think was my problem... I tried and looked at everything kind members suggested,Get somebody down at the thru-hull to wriggle the wires while you are moving through the water and see if anythings lights up on your panel.
Yeah, credit where its due! I assume you only confirmed your problem after cutting the unit open?Yeah!!I suspect you're only a few weeks from total failure of the (internal) wiring connection. There's probably corrosion going on inside there where it appears to be sealed.
You know Ive never pulled it out holding the wire, I only use the ring thats attached to the top when extracting it and always just hold the top part when reinserting it. But hey, it must be well over 10 years old and who knows what the previous owner did with it. Thanks again. It came apart when I was pulling it out of the thru-hull There are actually two pieces making up the plug that goes into the thru-hull.
I did not pull it out using the wire. You know Ive never pulled it out holding the wire, I only use the ring thats attached to the top when extracting it and always just hold the top part when reinserting it. Things break unfortunately. Some well before you would expect or before you would like. Our boat is 5 years old and I recently replaced my DST800 triducer. The intermittency near drove me crazy. One day it would output accurate speeds the next 3 it would read 0.0 kts and then it would work the next time out. The temperature reading stopped working long ago. I replaced the DST800 and all is well now. Even the water temperature is accurate @10.2C, burrrr. But hey, it must be well over 10 years old and who knows what the previous owner did with it. Thanks again.
I did not pull it out using the wire.
Tell me about it!! Every time I look at my boat something breaks or falls off or doesn't work the way it used to, but this is the life we choose;-)Things break unfortunately. Some well before you would expect or before you would like.
Not entirely true; I just replaced mine a few weeks ago. The paddlewheel (transducer) and blank fit the existing thru-hull perfectly. If when you you replace the transducer the newer transducers are different size and will need to hall the boat and repace the whole thing,me and friend did this a few years back and found out the new transducers uses a little bigger hole size for the part that the plug goes in and so maybe look for a older model that uses same size.
