I think we have yet to hear the whole story. Odd growth line on the hull. Power for water-maker but not for nav? Also, didn't they have a compass at least to have a clue where they were going??? Inquiring minds want to know.....

They did have a wind generator on the stern. I did notice the odd growth line on the hull.

What would make it unseaworthy? Looks like sails are still good? Also what the heck do you do with a dog that size on a boat, my 45 lb hound dog mutt would be a total pain without places to run around.

They have a term for this. Manifestly unfit for voyage.

A navy or USCG captain will declare that whenever they want to get idiots off of an unsafe boat. Like that one. Looks like a real piece of work.

I'm just glad the dogs are OK. Shows how adaptable dogs are.

Ha! We sail with our 80 lb Golden and our 24 lb Dachshund. Everyone is happy. 'Course we don't cross oceans. :)

Not sure why your assessment is "unsafe boat" except any boat would be unsafe for incompetent crew. With just a brief look, it appears that they simply lay a-hull in the middle of the ocean for months. I'm guessing that the odd water line is the result of them bobbing around for months, rather than actually sailing. Perhaps they just didn't know how to proceed and simply dropped their sails early into the voyage?
Or perhaps just lost steerage and had no idea how to repair it.

2 sailors and 2 dogs rescued.
Good thing they had plenty of oatmeal and rice aboard, otherwise it might have been just 2 sailors rescued.

Don't water makers take a huge amount of power to operate?? Hard to believe a wind generator could sustain that..... but what do I know

Small emergency ones are hand powered. Medium-size ones usually have hand powered back up. It’s only the big ones that require power only

Looks like they also had solar. I find it interesting that what looks like a bra is hanging off the blade of the wind turbine. LOL

I'm assuming no declaration was needed; I assume those ladies COULD NOT WAIT to get off that rat-ship. If they WERE OK, all they would have needed was a rhumb line magnetic course and distance to a good landfall, and they could have saved their boat.

That's the USN, not Boat-US. There are there to save souls, and not tow an old boat 900nm at 7 knots someplace. There are on a mission. The captain would have made that declaration only if they didn't want to get off, and he thought they should.

Yes, I'd assume they scuttled the boat (I didn't have any audio for that video clip). It's a shame ... the boat may have not been very pretty, but didn't deserve that fate, given that she took care of the crew for months while they couldn't manage to sail her to a port. :(
