Hood furler

My 37.5 has the factory installed Hood furler. It has not worked as it should since I bought the boat new in 96. Normally not more than a PITA but this week I was offshore in force 8 winds and could not reduce sail from the cockpit. Had to go forward in those conditions and was only able to reduce the sail by pulling on tjhe furler line at the exit point. Am I missing something or is this just a bad system?

lead angle is always important to prevent fouling of the furling line. I have a Hood, and copied the manual to this site.

My 35.5 has similar issues. The shroud covering the drum doesn't align properly with the angle that the line is fed into the drum. I've seen other boats that have a second snatch block installed to bring the line in alignment with the shroud opening. I'm thinking of trying to rotate the shroud cover.

We had essentially the same Hood furler on our 40.5. Even with a snatch block facilitating alignment, the unit never furled smoothly. Furthermore, the location below decks made maintenance very difficult and the overall poor design made even simple maintenance tasks, such as changing out the furling line, extremely difficult. The unit eventually began to disintegrate and had to be replaced.

The disintegrating Hood furling system was replaced in its entirety (including extrusions) with a Profurl titanium. We also had our local fabricator make dual mounting stanchions to bring the entire unit above deck. These stanchions were a much stronger mount than the original single plate, moving the drum above decks made for very easy and fast inspection and maintenance, and the forestay adjuster was made readily accessible, rather than being hidden inside the furler housing.

The superior design, workmanship and materials of the Profurl allows for much faster and trouble-free sail changes, furling is now a one-handed operation, and operations such as changing the furling line are simple and efficient.

Wrote an article awhile ago about our Hood furling system. The modification that I made to ours has made a remarkable improvement. https://hunter.sailboatowners.com/mods.php?task=article&mid=45&aid=100062&mn=42
I have this very same issue, but my Hood furler is mounted above decks.

The swivel shackle it is currently using, lets the furler drum rotate too much messing with the angles to the inlet and outlet for the continuous line. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix/anchor this drum so that I can keep it in line?

ps: I cannot tighten the halyard any further as it is all the way up. Replacement sail is a couple of inches too long.

I have the below deck strap setup too. I imagine you could do the same above deck. The strap would have some twist in it to connect to the anchor roller but it should work.

Maybe 2 straps each with a 90° twist, or just a short 90° twist shackle?

Hi Chip, the strap worked for our situation. But you need to close the gap between the upper and lower part of your drum that allows the double line to feed out. The two parts on our drum are together, almost touching.

I already fixed that after the pic was taken. they are now tight together. Thanks though

So I think I have it fixed. After multiple attempts with twist shackles, turnbuckles, and other assorted parts. (4 trips to West Marine), I ended up adding a ring with plastic spacers to the bottom of the drum, and then managed to find two shackles I already owned that just fit without allowing too much slack in the connection. In testing at the dock, this is now stable and spins freely without jamming.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

nicely done Pateco. I have the traditional single line furler, I like the looks of your continuous line setup(s).
