Fill with epoxy, an injector/syringe works well.... paint over spots with topside paint or gel coat.

Drill the old holes a little larger to remove any old sealant and dirt. Clean the holes. Tape the inside of the holes. Coat the holes with regular epoxy. Thicken epoxy to a peanutbutter consistency. Fill the holes with thickened epoxy.

.....or you can put stainless bolts in the holes, using a small dab of sealer under the washers.... it may not look as good as no holes at all, but it looks infinitely better than a messy patch job....

I'm with centerline put some bolts in. The toughest part of getting the mount on is getting the angle right. I wanted to make it strong enough to trailer without removing the engine so beefed it up a little. There is matching angle inside as backing plates that extend all the way to the bottom of the transom. I also have a travel rod that extends from the engine mount to the trailer. Send me a private message and I will tell you of an easy theft deterrent for the engine on that mount. I don't want to tell the thieves lurking on the internet.

Rather than painting the sealed holes, I matched the color using pigment in the thickened epoxy. It worked nicely.

LeeandRick, that is a very novel way to accomplish the same thing as the original transom wedge!

The original transom wedge was too narrow for the Garlick mount. Plus the original mount would never have survived today's highways with 70 pounds hanging from it. ;) I do have a wedge (cut in half, I tried :banghead:) that I will give to someone.

Not ready yet but I do plan on doing this some day.... What's the right angle and why is it needed?

The right angle is not needed, it is just my attempt at getting the mounting bracket plumb to the boat and water. Since the transom is not vertical or flat some sort of shimming or spacers is needed to get the engine in line with the boat. Getting the engine in line is not required if you don't mind the engine going up and down at funny angles and the thrust line of the prop being weird.

I have a lot of right angle on the transom to form a load path from the deck to the hull along the transom (top to bottom of transom) so I can leave the 70# engine on the mount during trailering. This reinforcing plus the bar that comes up from the trailer has 12000 mile so far with nothing breaking, coming loose, or elongation of slots on the Garlick mount. Just a time saver for me plus I can semi permanently ( wow, that's bad grammar) attach the engine to the mount to deter thieves.

agprice22, epoxy will deteriorate when exposed to uv (sun) light. I would put a coat of paint or gelcoat over it.

These are 1/4" maybe 5/16 holes at a low angle to the sun, probably hidden by the current mount... I think they will last, oh... 30 years before any significant deterioration would occur...
