sorry to all, this was not meant to devolve into a basic safety gear discussion. We have/have been researching all the safety gear we can possibly have and need. Wife and i just got in a discussion this weekend, as to if there was a proper/legal shape for a simple orange safety flag. Neither of us gave much thought to its shape as we assumed it would be a simple standard thing. I could not find a simple straight forward answer on line, so i was hoping some of you kind people might have a quick, simple answer.

Kevin, welcome to the forum. If you think this got bad do a search on coffee and how to brew it. And don't get me started on pets onboard.

Kevin,

Look at the bright side; you got a good recommendation for a mouth Safety Air Horn (Blaster), plus a consensus answer on the shape of your orange flag--triangular. You did good; only slightly more than one page of posts.:dancing: No bruises!

Kermit - LOL. Im a coffee snob so, i hear ya. i know of a dozen ways to brew coffee :)
as for pets - i dont go there. we took our dogs kayaking 1 time. thats it. never again. Wolf wanted NOTHING to do with the water and worried the whole time and violet (shih tzu - and the dumbest animal ive ever seen) would jump in. swim one lap around the kayak, want back in but to small to climb in, so you pick her up and put her back in the boat, and 2 seconds later, splash, lap, repeat for 3 hours!!! NEVER AGAIN.

do alway enjoy a good discussion. DO NOT enjoy snarky comments from some.

+1 to Jackdaws blaster suggestion. After rusting air cans, then the horn not work, I found the blaster. Every time I go to Bacons and they have a used one, I buy it, as I don't see them new anywhere.. I now have three. Also good for New Years Eve.

If I kayaked I'd carry a Safety Blaster for sound making. Light, waterproof, and no batteries or gas to replace. We have one on BlueJ, and it is ridiculously (120 db SPL) loud.

Does the Safety Blaster work immediately after being submersed?

Just shake the water out of it. Then one blow clears it totally and everybody better cover their ears.

Kevin. Good post. Welcome to the forum. I was thinking along the lines of the bicycle flag I attached to my daughters bike. A fiberglass pole, like a tent pole. Attached to the bow or stern with a bright streamer flag. BigEasy described the problem for us sailboaters. With a high rise bow, a big front sail, and sitting down in a cockpit the visibility for water level objects is a challenge. Making your self highly visible is a great idea, especially as you venture out into waters where boaters are less likely to be looking for a kayak (i.e. crossing a channel). Stay safe.

I seem to end up with plenty of guests turning green
Jeep... It is not the turning that is a problem, it is the sustained green experience.

You, sir, are one lucky fella'. Being seasick, you feel like you're gonna die and afraid you won't. I'm envious.
yikes. no. no sea sickness, even when every one elts was. I was fine. Altitude sickness? every time. My body does NOT handle anything above 3,000 feet. strange but true.
