A DJI Mavic Pro! He can take photographs of himself while sailing! My wife and I just purchased both a Mavic Pro and Phantom 3 for the upcoming sailing season, and we are thrilled with the prospect of getting video and photos of our new boat on the water! Here is a photo from the Mavic last week. Sorry, no lake photos yet... :(

Find out what phone he has. Go to Vista Print and design a custom cover with his boat, boat name, favorite gunkhole, whatever. About $20 but will be worth much more in brownie points. My cover has an NOAA chart of the BVI, my boats name in one corner and a properly oriented rosette in the other. Hard to loose.
I went to VistaPrint online and made a calendar from our pics of our BVI's trip for a Christmas present The hard part was choosing from 500+ shots.

By your description, sounds to me like your father needs something that could trigger the "kid in a candy shop" reflex.

I note from your profile that one of your various locations is Richardson Bay. I don't know where you father lives, but if you and he are still there: Only about 6 miles from Sausalito, in San Rafael, is a Harbor Freight store. The Harbor Freight chain has lots of outlets all around the USA.

Granted, a lot (if not most) of the items at Harbor Freight correspond to the lower end of "Made in China" quality ranking. But also Harbor Freight has many hidden gems for the DIY enthusiast who has the experience to ferret out the good from the bad. And if he goes wrong: 1) The item can be returned. 2) The item probably worked OK for a while and at the low price he got his money's worth, probably cheaper even than renting the equivalent tool.

Anyway, where I am going is buy him a Harbor Freight gift card. He is sure to spend many minutes (if not at least an hour or two) going through the aisles. If nothing else, he will get a lot of entertainment value out of it!

It was difficult to hold a camera in one hand and a Painkiller in the other!
Offer to hold her painkiller while she takes pictures, then finish them both. I'm not sure what you'd acheive doing that but you'd have 2 painkillers at the ready. It's a win- win

If I drank hers I would need a real painkiller! She's funny that way.

For the person who has everything time rather than stuff is often a better gift.
Perhaps arrange to spend some time sailing with him as a family, just the two of you, whatever will be seen as special. Treat him to an experience that connects you.

This year my daughter when asked what she'd like for Christmas said "I don't need anything, I don't have room for anything and what I'd really like is to do something with you. "
It made our hearts jump that what she really wanted was to spend time with us. So we've planned a trip together.

Just a thought

I would wholeheartedly suggest a pair of "Stabilized" binoculars if he doesn't already have them.
I thought they were a con, so I made sure I could return them. They are not! They are fantastic.
Another good thing is one can move up from 7X30 to 10X50 because of the stabilization and their lighter weight, both good things for those of us who are older.
