Christmas present for Sailor father who has everything.

Hi there! I need Christmas present suggestions for a J/35 and Oceansport 35 owner who already has everything. He is not the sentimental type and enjoys boats mostly as maintenance projects, but also likes fishing. I live on a Catalina 30 myself so have some knowledge of what boat ownership is like. But I always have such a hard time coming up with ideas for him!

He goes through tools like s**t through a goose, so there has to be something that may be a little more permanent and meaningful...

Thanks!

I have no suggestions because I am stuck on why he goes through tools! How? Does he lose them? Does he break them? Maybe your gift idea is in the answer somewhere... little gps trackers for his tools! :)

A sailor can never have too many gloves including a special pair of mechanics gloves. There are also some amazing LED headlamps with rechargeable LiON batteries at very affordable prices. I like a powerful CREE lamped unit for mechanicing and a lightweight LED headlamp with red lamping for sailing. Finally, since you are fogvalley, Pops should have an array of nice long underwear. I love my silk long handles.

Oh, he just is always buying a new tool for a special job. Last time he wanted a dual-radial belt sander for hull finishing and he's getting to old to hold it above his head all day. "He goes through tools" just means they don't have as much value as other things because he buys them himself all the time. Plus he has so much more money than me...

Does he already have my book? :D
Peggy, I got that for him for his birthday and he absolutely loved it! A rare slam-dunk for this guy.

Those are great suggestions. He's actually in Alaska, where summer sailing is like San Francisco Bay's coldest day of the year.

Welll...unless he's a tee-totaller, it's hard to go too far wrong with an expensive bottle of his favorite booze/wine/brandy or one of each. Or maybe a really cool wine opener...there are some amazing ones these days that just might appeal to a guy who's into exotic tools.

Pick a small item/idea. And get him the ABSOLUTE BEST ONE MADE.

Most people don't do this for themselves.

Knife? Get a Spyderco Atlanitc Salt
Flashlight? Marinebeam Ultra Long Range Illuminator

You get the idea.

Rhum Agricole from Martinique. Johnny Walker Platinum (actually Black is just awesome). One of those for sipping on cool nights .

Like the knife idea. Benchmade I brought myself is a constant pocket occupant. Spyderco makes a great folder with a marlin spike. How about a lure similar to his favorite attached to a plaque and a message about how fishing with him has influenced you.

1) couple bucks: get him a Kliket belt adjustment tool and first make him guess what it is before he gets to use it.
2) FEW MORE: GET HIM A STANT TESTER with cap matched for his particular radiator.
2) 300 bucks: get him a FLUKE with AC DC CLAMP ON CAPABILITY
3) $400-2000 get him a good sextant from celestaire and the US power squadron Celestial navigation course to go with it.

then put the rest of us on your christmas list.

Find out what phone he has. Go to Vista Print and design a custom cover with his boat, boat name, favorite gunkhole, whatever. About $20 but will be worth much more in brownie points. My cover has an NOAA chart of the BVI, my boats name in one corner and a properly oriented rosette in the other. Hard to loose.
