V25 Motor Mount

I'm looking to give the TsatzSue a Christmas present. A new motor mount.

I have the stock mount. It still works but I have had to replace the stainless pins. One snapped. The spring has never done the job. I actually made a set up out of a line run through the middle of a 1.25" dowel(T - Handle) to yank the motor up. With that set up and the line attached to the locking lever you need to be a marionette puppeteer to raise and lower the motor. That is getting old since raising and lowering the motor does not always coincide with flat calm water. That and there is no way my wife could accomplish the task. I have visioned myself falling overboard doing this.

To the point...Do any 25 owners out there have a recommendation for a good mount? I run a 2 stroke, 9.9 Johnson long shaft which I believe to be about 100lbs. There are so many choices I felt reaching out to you guys would be best.

Already have snow up here. So windy this weekend a 60mph gust actually spun the boat around 45 degrees. I have to jack her up and pull the wheels this weekend. Scary!!

I appreciate the help!!

No, this is all the motor I need. I wouldn't do with any less or more. The stock mount is tired and ready to go. 1977. I took it off stripped it down and to bare metal and refinished it when I got her. The technology is just old. Spring is tired. May have always been that way.

my 25 is equipped with a basic "swing up/down" mount, without any assist springs.... it holds the 4-stroke honda 10hp great.

but it has a small 4part tackle (dinghy blocks) with 1/4 line, to raise and lower the motor mount at any level the conditions require, with a jam cleat holding the tail of the line. it will safely withstand the pressures of full engine power in any wind/wave condition that you may be in.

ive seen this same set up on other boats and it seems to work good for those who try it.

the only thing I did to it after getting the boat was to replace the pivot bushings in the bracket....

Centerline,

The only problem is I don't have a stern rail. Is the set up attached to the stern rail? I have been looking. A rail would help out for a lot of things. My cousin has a new motor mount on his Oday 25. He can raise the motor with one hand. Pretty nice.

I have a Garelick motor mount on my Mac 25, I bought a second mount on E-Bay to run two
motors to see if the boat would plane. But I changed my mind because I did'nt think the transom could take it. Anyway I have this spare mount sitting in my garage that you can have, if you will pay for the shipping. This is the spring loaded mount for 2 stroke motors up to 20 HP not over 115 Lbs. $199.99 at West Marine. I am in my 70's and can lift my Merc moror with one hand with this mount. If you are interested. I can post pictures.I am in Michigan and the zip code is 48375 if you want to get shipping costs .If you check my albums you will see I don't put junk on my boat. This mount is used. but in very good shape. You can't beat almost FREE.
Merry Christmas Mac 25

Hi Mac 25. I definitely want it!! I would need to figure out the shipping part. You would need to bring it to a UPS nearby to get an estimate on shipping and packaging. I could pay them over the phone with a card. I that that is very possible. It would have to be after Christmas. Do you know the weight. UPS is one of my accounts. I can possibly call them and have everything ready for you. I really appreciate it. Send me a private message so we can close the loop.

You don't have a spare stern rail by any chance?

the upper block is not attached to the stern rail, but to a cleat on the top of the transom, with the lower block attached to a tang from the bottom pivot bolt of the bracket, just below the motor clamps...

if a person who has been using the type shown were ever to try the block and tackle set up, they would gut the lock out of that and use the tackle system for adjusting it.... the assist springs may be fine, but ive used that type of outboard bracket and its more of a hassle than not when leaning over the back of the boat to get the lock loose..... with the block and tackle, you never lean over except to grab the starter rope....

Got a photo of your setup you could share?

Russ, there is a pic at the bottom center of this page from my mac25 album, and another at the same location on the following page. not too detailed but you get the idea of how simple it is.... ill look for something that shows how the dead end of the line terminates at the cleat on top the transom and post it if I can find it...

these are all I can find at the moment... i have since added a clam cleat, but I still usually just wind the rope around the cleat...
other than not having to fuss with any lock bars, one of the things that makes it work so well is the geometry of where the block is attached to the swinging bracket vs where the anchor block is ... when the motor is down, the rope has a fairly direct pull upwards, and when the bracket comes towards the top, the pull is in towards the boat which is the same direction the bracket is swinging at that time....
the only thing that might make it even more convenient is to have an open top fixed fairlead block at the rear top of the transom to lay the line in so that I wouldnt even have to get up and pull it to keep from rubbing over the corner.... i could just flip the line in the block and adjust it as needed. but thats a bit more convenience that I think I need at this time:)....

Thanks a lot Centerline. I have a spare vang setup that came with my Vic 18 that should be about perfect for a similar motor lift. I'm getting pretty tired of leaning through the rail and fighting that T handle lock lever.
Wile I was there I looked over all your photos. I was surprised at how many items you and I have built very similar solutions for. great minds think alike I guess ;) .

Thanks again for the pics.

Russ,

I sent you a private message with my information. I calculated researched the weight and looked up your local UPS for estimated cost. My phone number is there as well. I am excited to get rid of the old mount. Give me a shout when you can.

I agree with the mods. We all seem to be on the same page.
