Evicted!

Last month Capt.Ron posted an article concerning Electric Shock Drowning, or, ESD. http://forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?threads/electrical-shock-drowning-esd-fresh-water.179649/
For those of you who were following this thread, I posted that I thought this was important enough to post at the marina. Article was taken down by the DM. OK, I'll just talk to people personally. Having been there for almost twenty years, I know a lot of boat owners. After talking to about ten people, some stated they had a vague notion of this and others knew nothing at all. All thanked me for the info and some asked why I did not post this in the common area. Gave them a bit of a rundown on what had transpired between me and the DM after I initially posted the article. Well, the DM must have seen me talking to people and took it upon himself that I was maligning the marina, the pedestals in particular. He posted a notice on the office door that stated " A boat owner here is going around expressing his opinions about the pedestals. They have all been checked and no problems were found." The first sentence in this notice is, of course, a complete falsehood. He would not give me the chance to explain the situation, would not answer my calls, or acknowledge me in person. On Sat., I went to pay my rent. Would not talk to me except to say, "I talked this over with the owner and we think it best if we part ways." He then handed me my walking papers. After I paid my slip fee, of course. Not all is lost, however. I have a slip lined up, not as nice, but less than 4 miles from my house instead of the now 15 miles and next to the marina I captain out of. Just goes to prove the old adage: No good deed shall go unpunished.

I guess the marina manager missed the part about how the electricity gets into the water? Our marina is in salt, but every slip holder signs an agreement that clearly states there is NO swimming or diving in the marina. Frankly, I don't trust the DIY marine AC wiring jobs I know are being done on some of our neighbor dock queens.

It certainly sounds like he took it as a personal attack. Guilt? You may never know.

Roland, you make it sound as if you took it upon yourself to post this notice without discussing it first with marina management. Not knowing the marina or their facilities maintenance program, I might not blame them for being offended, depending on how seriously they may or may not treat this issue. Don't you think it would have been a good idea to question and discuss this with the DM first ... before posting warnings and alarming your neighbors? I take it, there has not been an incident at your marina concerning ESD to date.

You still need to go have that talk with the owner, especially now that they have given you notice. I'd make it clear that you were not pointing fingers at their marina, but merely educating the public about something the marina already has posted in the marina: "No Swimming". Even if you are moving on, the owner needs to understand what what was really going on.

Then again, I'm just a "trouble maker" like you. I was always letting the marina know when they had a fresh water leak that was costing them money, or a broken dock that was a safety risk. You would think they would want to know these things and appreciate it. Instead, you are a trouble maker. Go figure...

Greed and unregulated capitalism.

If it costs them a penny to fix an issue, YOU are a troublemaker.

Jerks and other expletives deleted!

Sorry to hear about your eviction. Very, very glad to hear you'll end up being better off and closer to your boat! Some jerky things end up to have silver linings. :)

Greed and unregulated capitalism.
But capitalism assures us that we have choices when it comes to choosing a marina to reside at. Thanks to capitalism, we have prosperity to enjoy leisure activities. Thanks to capitalism, Roland might have a better place to call home.

I still have to discuss this with the marina owner who I've known and been friends with for 20 years. I figured if he had a problem with me he would have contacted me first. I'll give this a few days or a week or so because I don't want it to look like I'm begging to come back. Not that I would want to while this DM is still there because it would just be a hostile, tense environment. My side has to be heard, though, and if he is not willing to listen then I have the information I need. BTW, I'm not the first one this has happened to. It's just that when I come upon a good cause I have trouble letting go. As Tom Petty said, " You can stand me up at the gates of hell and I won't back down." Maybe a character flaw. Maybe after 32 years of teaching middle schoolers, I don't intimidate easily. Might need therapy. But after 65 trips around the sun maybe I just need a cold brew. Who knows. :)

Roland,

It's time to kick it upstairs to ownership. Listing a potential problem to fellow boaters should not cause you
to be evicted. So if this is how you have been treated for displaying & warning boaters & management of a problem that doesn't respond, take your argument to the County.

Wow, I find this treatment as very poor. Who's protecting who?
Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease & the waste may just need to go.

Bitch-n-moan pal....., I would emphatically.

Presentation is the key. Sure, it's a good cause, but did you present the issue as if it were something that your dock neighbors should be wary about at this particular marina?
You're a school teacher. How would you like it if somebody came into your classroom, without your permission, and started talking to your students about the danger of sexual predators, presenting a picture that made it appear as if YOU could be a sexual predator and that your students should be wary of you. You wouldn't like it very much, I bet!
It's one thing to stand up for a cause ... it's another thing to be needlessly obnoxious.

Scott, I made it a point to tell those that I spoke with that this was not about this or any other marina or boat in particular. This was just good information. As I wrote earlier, all were appreciative of the article. In fact, someone told me he made five copies and was going to spread the word. I've never been accused of being diplomatic but I make it a point to not step on anyone's toes, either. This DM apparently just got his knickers in a wad and closed his ears and mind. So be it. You can't fix stupid.

Are you going to post this article at your new marina?
Don't have to. There are only about eight boats at this marina and the only person we see on a regular basis is a friend of mine who lives aboard and watches out for things and works the docks at the charter company I work for. There is no real dockmaster on site. As this is right next to the marina I captain out of, everyone knows what happened and I've been welcomed in. No problem, there.

I would definitely post the article again, and probably leave one on each car in the parking lot as well. Especially if you went the extra mile initially when talking to people, to emphasize that this was a PSA of sorts and not directed at the marina.

What a way to treat customers - imagine what they must be like to deal with when there actually is a problem.

Not to belabor a point, but you pretty much said that you DID step on the DM's toes (when you posted signs without permission). You didn't go to him first? Now you're calling him stupid? The holier than thou attitude that is often on display on an internet forum doesn't go over so well in the real world. There are always at least 2 sides to a dispute. I understand that we are only hearing one side, biased as it may be.
