Earthquake this morning

Had a 5.2 earthquake this shortly after 1 a.m. this morning about 80 miles to the east of us. It wasn't a rocker, more like someone kicking the chair out from you. But it got me thinking about earthquakes and boats.

Has anyone been on a boat during an earthquake? I am sure you would not know it. More like hear it but wonder what it would be like. Or even driving down the road in a car.

We've been getting them the last few years. The common suspicion is the fracking going on in Oklahoma where the epicenters are. The only time/place anyone feels them is planted on firm ground. Buildings shake. Saw some nearby chimney damage. Boats and rolling cars seem to be isolated from the vibration.

My daughter was on a soccer field during the 8.9 Loma Prieta quake. Said the land rolled across the field. It was like riding on a surf board as the waves rolled past them.

I remember a friend being out on a boat off Santa Cruz when the big quake hit in '89. He said it was really weird seeing the land rolling like it was a blanket someone was shaking- dust shooting up. The water was pretty unchanged, but it must have given some pretty mixed feelings about returning to shore.

We were in Dana Point during the Whittier EQ on our O'Day 27. We were eating at the time. All of a sudden, we could hear the shrimp or fish clacking noisily. We thought it was a seal chasing them but then the boat started tugging at her lines. We turned on the radio and learned about the quake. More recently, I was on our 40.5 in Long Beach and was awakened by it's tugging. However, in that case, I could feel the ground movement pretty distincly, if muffled of course. Those are the only ones I can recall in three and a half decades.

Two biggest ones I remember were Northridge in '94 and Big Bear in '92. Both of those were rockers. I mean everything was moving. They lasted about 15 to 20 seconds of continuous moving. My very first one I remember was in Iwakuni Japan in 1985. That scared the crap out of me. It too was a rocker with everything literally moving. Furniture was walking around the room.

In my years stationed at El Toro in CA and Iwakuni Japan I never felt a quake. I move to the middle of the country and I get them.

I live on the sedimentation of the ancient Mississippi River Fault. For reasons which are boring, I had to study the seismic activity in the mid 1970's of the Gulf Coast Regions surrounding New Orleans for ± 200 miles.
Guess who are the world renown experts of seismic study?
Tic Tic Tic....

The Order of Jesuits Priest

I had the opportunity to discuss their work about the science of seismology.
Guess how many earthquakes happen DAILY in the Mississippi Sound?

20-23:yikes:

The big surprise to me was when they laughed and said "You should see how many quakes happened when a large Hurricane passes by."

The Low pressure of a Hurricane spreads over say 200 mile diameter, reduces such a huge weight load off the Gulf Bottom.... 40+ quakes daily. They had facts that Cat 3+ storms were storm surge (wave size) intensified by Earthquakes. Kinda like shaking a bowl of jello or water.

I was also amazed at subsurface water (like vast areas of Kansas) are effected by MOON TIDES!

The common suspicion is the fracking going on in Oklahoma
Or perhaps the VAST removal of irrigation ground water in I 40 Kansas farm belt for many many years.
Hmmmm....? Oh is that area close to Oklahoma?

BTW....
Small quakes are a good thing, and releases built up energy that the Earth does as the mantle has shifted for long before us "Tiny impact" men have when compared to such tremendous forces.

@Brian D I worked the emergency Ham Radio Net for the Mexico City Quake of the late 70's. Plus you are living on the "edge" of the cliff out there.:frown:

I was sitting in a parked fire engine at the staging area after the Northridge quake when an aftershock hit that started it rocking so hard I got off and moved away in case it flipped. This morning in San Clemente I'd have slept thru it if my wife hadn't poked me and said "EARTHQUAKE!!" in my ear.

I was aboard USS Nimitz moored to Pier B at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the early 90s. One morning the ship jolted as though one had run over a speed bump. The universal question was, "what was that all about?". Later it was announced that there had been a local earthquake...don't remember the size but it certainly was not very big. I was skeptical but there was never any other explanation. The depth beneath the keel at the time was about 25'.

I always was petrified of being caught in a big box store like Home Depot. There was a 5.2 aftershock from Northridge when I was in one. The racks started shaking, the noise was intense. A rack of pipe fell near me. After, there was complete silence as everyone walked out of the exits.

We had an earthquake recently. It was the most amazing few minutes of my life. It was early in the morning shortly before the alarm was set to ring. I was making love to my wife. It was poetry in motion. Our bodies and souls were one. I've never experienced such oneness. Then it hit! The floors started shaking, the walls started rattling, the dogs started barking, the car alarm started screaming. The pictures started falling off the walls and the china cabinet came crashing down. The noise and ruckus were so bad that it durn near woke up my wife!

Kermie, you are the man! The only way I'd admit she was asleep is if I really thought she was awake and just playing "possum"! Great story line and visual though!

Many years ago we really did have an earthquake. A local radio station (WCOS) was asking for listeners to call with their earthquake stories. I called and told that story knowing that my wife-at-the-time was at work. As soon as I was off the air my accountant's wife called laughing her behind off warning me of my impending death. After work my wife told me she had heard about it and truly was pissed. Things settled down until she heard it the next Saturday on the station's Best Of show. We've been divorced for many years.

This one woke me up, but our house is only about 10 miles from the epicenter. I found it very funny as all the news could find from our town was a single surveillance camera of fronds shaking on a palm tree. Was at Isthmus Cove for one a while back. Didn't even notice that there was a quake. Heard about it when friends arrived later in the afternoon.
