I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered previously - which I'm sure it must have been - but I can't find it.

My new-to-me H36 has a fixed length wire topping lift.

When the sail is raised the wire goes slack and bangs back and forth and sometimes interacts with the backstay.

I am most concerned with potential wear on the sail.

I like the wire backstay particularly for winter storage but would like to overcome this problem while keeping the wire if possible.

Has anyone come up with a neat way of dealing with this and/or have any other advice?

Any and all input would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Try a bungee attached to the wire topping lift a few feet above the boom to keep a little tension on the topping lift.

Cool question - it's something that never occured me to me before but I will take a look at.

Another question though - does the dodger get in the way of the boom when the topping lift is slacked off? I am wondering if my sail is too big as the bottom of the boom catches on the top of the topping lift.

Thanks all for your input. I was thinking about something along the lines Rardi described but possibly just disconnecting the topping lift and tying it to the back stay when sailing without any other line.

Re the dodger: I don't have one but do have a bimini to which the same issue applies. My boom is clear just above when the sail is lowered. One of the things I like about the static wire is that it reliably arrests the boom at that level - no perceptible stretch - even when I draped a tarp over the boom all winter.
