Hunter 42 Madisonville
I have an 01 Hunter 420 that I'm looking to sell. There are a few issues that need to be dealt with and I'm wondering if I should spend the money before I sell the boat, or sell as is:

* sails: must be replaced. Both are original. Guess I'd have to spend about 5,000
* windlass: motor burnt up last month, new one is 1,600, new motor is about $500.
* detailing: gel coat is a little chalky with numerous stains. a local guy can make the boat look NEW, but would cost almost 4,000. The guy is amazing and will make every exterior surface look perfect.

Would I be better of just selling as is, doing some, or all of above?

Leave big things. You will never see a proper return on them. Just account for them in your ask, or expect it be reflected in offers. You didn't invest in keeping the boat up before, no need to start now.

Do little things. Clean the boat. Get excess crap off of it.

buy a set of used sails that are newer than yours, $1000
change the motor, $500
you'll find a slew of people that will detail it for $1000 (ask for recommendations)

$2500

i agree with duality- i think i am like most people , when i bought my H42, i ended up buying the oldest one i looked at simply because it was clearly in the BEST condition-a much loved boat- a decision i initially struggled with (why buy an older boat????) but a decision i have never regretted. the Cleanest , smartest boats sell fastest and at the best prices!

Selling a 42' boat is just like selling a house: it has to show well to sell. But if it's obvious from the cosmetics that the boat has been neglected, buyers will only wonder what's been neglected that they can't see...and walk.

So take duality's advice...have the boat detailed INSIDE as well as outside (that includes the bilges and sumps) . Clean out every cabinet, drawer and locker...and take everything that isn't going with the boat OFF the boat. Make sure everything works.. Just as you can go with good used sails, you can even replace non-working equipment with "entry level" ...as long as it looks good and works. 'Cuz any offer is gonna be "subject to survey" and whether it works or not is all the surveyor will be interested in.
