Soundproofing a Mk 1

Good morning all. I would like to soundproof my Catalina 30 Mk 1 mid-engine but don't want to reinvent the wheel. Checked with Search and found no previous threads so I'm asking here. Obviously it's a rat's nest down there; under the sink, the wood panel below the sink needing to be removed to access anything atop the engine so not sure how I'd put in on that, all manner of filters and pumps sticking off the front of the engine box, the Universal 25 parked high on the rails with no room on top, three access doors to check oily bits...But even if I cut the noise down by half it would make a difference.
Has anyone used West Marine's (easily accessible here in Middle Ontario)? I was thinking the 1/2" thick self-adhesive.
Any advice? As always, Thanks.

You'll want the one inch foam with the high density core, it's much better at damping the low frequency vibration of a diesel. The thinner stuff is more for gas outboards.
The West Marine kits are good, but you can get them cheaper at Defender.com and others.

Thanks but I'm in Canada, Defender stuff gets held up in customs, there's a WM store here in my town. I thought the 1/2" would be easier to use only because of how crowded the engine box is already, the Universal 25 fills it pretty good. MY biggest concern is I can wrap the sides relatively easily, how do I do under the cabinet knowing that in order to work on parts of the engine I have to remove the bottom panel, which currently I can slide out as it's just 1/4" plywood. Add the soundproofing and it'd have to remove the entire sink cabinet, drains and all to work on it. Wasn't sure if anyone else had tackled this already.

I'm in the same boat as Marc, no pun intended. It's insanely loud so I'll be curious to see what answers come up.

I did my engine compartment with a combination of Soundown from WM, and Dynamat from the Auto parts store. Made a big difference. C30, Mk2.

The problem I have is that the Westerbeke is larger and completely fills the engine compartment to the point a flopper door had to be added to the bench seat to fit it in. So the only way to make that quieter seems to be to expand the bench seat somewhat which would reduce the iland hieght in the galley and raise the seating height all around to keep the ability of having sleeping area where the table is. I use this area rather than the V-Birth to sleep while crusing as im older and gimped up a bit making it very hard to get into the vbirth area. Anyone done this kind of project? I will try the intake method too but would like to hear from anyone that has expanded there seating area to fit larger diesel engines. Thanks. MC.

??Think, literally, out of the box?? Would it be possible to add the 1" heavier stuff ABOVE the engine where there's no room below, and just place the seat cushion on top of that? Just aksin'.

Thanks Stu. The top of the engine sits level with the top of the locker door. If putting the one inch foam there then preasure would be put directly on engine and components. I already put new motor mounts in this year wouldnt this cause undue stress on the engine and parts? My thoughts eere more in lifting only that part of the seat that the engine is exposed to. Im going to try and make up some drawings to see how it would effect the boat. Keep the ideas coming please also let me know what everyone thinks of Stus idea is there something im missing? Something else with his thoughts that would work? In already picturing ideas using Stus suggestion.

I used a combination of WM 1" soundproofing and dynamat from a local autoparts store. Next item is to quiet the air intake. I will post some photos soon. New to posting here but long time watcher. I also built some plywood panels to block the port side of the engine compartment from the port settee etc and this gave me a place to add more soundproofing. It was a bit difficult but the temporary installations have really been working well. I only made the temporary panels to see how well it might work. Photos to follow.
