Repalcing a halyard

Looking for suggestions on how to replace a halyard AFTER the messenger line came loose... Obviously, the halyard runs up inside the mast. It runs about 3/4 the way up the mast. The mast is presently off the boat resting on saw horses.

Electricians snake will work or long run of stiff wire. Just hook halyard on and pull it through! Chief

A trick they use to run wire through conduit is to tie a rag to a light line and stuff it into the conduit. Then use compressed air to blow the rag through.

You could do the same thing by starting at the upper sheave and blowing towards the mast step. Lay the line out first and tie a stick to the other end so that you don't blow the line all the way through. Try to remember not to touch the line while it is running. This has bad consequences. Don't ask how I know this.

Geeze, Flim... First you lost a sheave. Now you lost a halyard. Are you sure you remember where you left the mast ?

All good stuff, but my mast is UP. Halyard isn't broken but old. Just tie new one to old one and pull it through?

Sunday, some people sew the new to old halyard end with a few loops of whipping twine. Others use a paper clip unbent into the S shape, and wrap a couple bits of electrical tape around. I have laid strips of electrical tape lengthwise over the join, and then wrapped a couple wraps around. Pull gently, you don't want to break the electrical tape. That's probably why I'd try the paper clip route next time...

The paper clip sounds like a good idea but I want to make sure there no "coming apart at the seams"!

Hopefully you will not have to pull hard enough on the old halyard as it feeds the new halyard such that they would come apart. This isn't like the loads when hoisting your main, you're just hoisting another length of line. :D

I slid the halyard cover back 5 inches, cut the core, stuck the new halyard inside the cover, slid cover back, tied tight with string.
