put it where ever you want just make sure that it is not a trip hazard and close to the side as much as possible along with being able to use a line on it and also make sure it is in solid material ...if going through cored deck hollow it out over size and fill with west six-10 or thickened epoxy and then drill through after its cured for your through bolts and add a backing plate on the underside ....then seal with butyl by countersinking the holes on the top side then blot it all up and go sailing

I WasThinking the Same Thing a While Back

I started using the winches as a cleat and real cleats keep moving down the list of things to do.

Someone sent pictures a while back of his addition. Taking his idea and expanding upon it my plan was to ad the to the lip where the hull and cabin top are joined. I was going to get some SS rod and tap holes to match the cleat then add a riser about an inch or so to get the clearance from the side of the cabin top then put a machine screw through the cleat then riser and lip then with the rod under the lip draw it all up together. If you look at how the shrouds are attached to a Hobie 16 you'll get the picture.

Brian;

Can you tell us how your boat is slipped. Is it on a finger dock with only three cleats. A picture would help. There is a way to tie the boat without having to put a midship cleat on the boat.

Installed our cleats on the hull/cabin joint. backed with steel washers as the underside is curved. allows just enough room for using 1/2" dock line between cleat and cabin top. I would have preferred to have it a bit further outboard or slightly higher to allow a bit more room for looping dock lines.

Twalker;

I strongly urge you if you must insist installing a midship cleat like that, you remove it and add a round bar underneath with holes drilled in it for the screws to distribute weight for pulling. As a dealer, I repaired boats with midship cleats attached like that did not distribute the load out which basically either ripped out or tore the hull to deck join out and that was not an easy repair not to mention the coast.

I have always recommended a midship cleat on the dock. Why. You can add a line or dock line to the bow and pull back which will cause the stern to go out and vice versa for the bow with a line tied to the stern either of which can be secured to a dock mid cleat.

Thanks for that CD. I had actually built an epoxy/glass backer that I put in that location to distribute loads - just didn't have pic of it.

Reason for mid ship cleat vs mid dock is I can loop a line from the mid cleat to any dock cleat, keep low power on the motor and the boat will pull and hold herself against the dock. I can then take my time to secure bow/stern lines and springs. Makes single handed docking much easier - only one line needed to control the boat (unless there is very strong wind/current)

For me it is primarily a docking aid - bow and stern lines/springs are used to secure to the dock when departing at the end of the day. - for this a mid dock cleat is very helpful!

This is exactly why I want to add a midship cleat. It would be especially useful when single-handing coming into the dock. One line secured midship first will hold the boat in place until I cut power and attach other lines. BrianW

Just be warned that if you do not really distribute the load you are asking for trouble. gents, I repaired quite a few boats in my time and even some with midcleats some of which had distributed the load as well. I really do not advise this but as I always say, it is up to the individual to make that choice. I have nothing else to say

Spring Lines

I spring mine from a line on the stern cleat. Seems easier for me than making my way to a mid ship cleat when alone. Or as I mentioned before try using the winch as a cleat.

I'll probably stick with the winch. Sometimes I probably overthink things. BrianW
