I am planning on adding davits to my Hunter 38 this spring, but with the two storage compartments on the swim platform I think it could be a problem. Anyone have any suggestions about how to get this done, brand name tips or generally good ideas about this?

Great pictures, thanks. Is the brand name Ocean Davits? It looks like the braces are mounted further outboard to avoid the swim platform compartments, right? Do the braces interfere very much with getting to the holding or fuel tanks?

None

No interference at all and yes pretty much the only drilling is
at the bottom of the supports and than U clamps on the guard rails where the stern seat
are and no interference with seats.
They the davit base are mounted to t he outer sides of the stern with plenty
of room for opening of the stern compartments and check my holding regularly
and store fenders and extra anchor and other things with no problems.
I installed the davits high but still see out the back and stern light is clear to see from behind and mine have adjustment to push out away from stern so dinghy drops down and touching stern very little and I have double strut to keep the davits from swinging side ways.
They are Ocean Marine Davits made in Canada.
I got my davits used from a 410 Hunter and have a install manual from Ocean Marine and will look on my boat for it to show info.

Nick - I have contacted Ocean Davits and am waiting for a call back. Do you know what model you have? Their sight is confusing because I don't know which will fit. Thanks again, and safe sailing.

We installed Garhauer davits on our 376 before heading to Mexico - five years later we are still thrilled with their function & durability. The braces for the stern rail come down in the small flat area next to the opening lazarette & it's perfect - also had Mark Garhauer make a solar panel mount on the davits & we have two Kyocera 135 w solar panels mounted on them - worked out great. I f want more pics or information feel free to contact me.

We have a 2005 Hunter 38 and have the factory bolt-on Davits. I purchased them from the factory after we had owned the boat for a year. Have been great for the last 8 years, no problems at all, but I did replace the blocks with bigger ones from Garhauer. We carry a 10' Aluminum hulled RIB with 15hp 2 stroke. The davits are for the 40 series Hunters but fit the 38 as she has the same arch. Seems they are available from the SBO store. You will want to confirm with them that they will fit your boat.

Like I said I got them used off a Hunter 410 and the guy at Ocean Marine said they are the same for my H-36 and should be for your 38.
My manual has HSD 30/40 & SD 30/40 but have seen different setup on 356
and do like the setup better on mine.
What I like about mine is the double strut support that goes from side to side
of the outer part of the davits where the tackle system is hooked to and this double strut keeps the davits stable and keeps them from moving or from swinging and also where the tackle system is hooked on the end of the tubing is adjustable so you can push the position out away from the stern so when lowering the dinghy it doesn't hit the stern, well it does touch the edge of the stern but a little push.
I would also check out Garhauer system and have heard good things about them from my friends and they claim Garhauer has everything for very good price.
But love my Ocean Marine Davits and never had a problem and keep my
8HP on while dinghy is on the davits and while sailing out in the gulf.

Couple of things to consider.
Does the stern light still work with the dingy there?
Can the everybody that helms' the boat see aft? My First Mate's view aft was totally blocked due to her being 5' 0" tall.
Can you still use the walk thru?

Mostly

When installing davits all the above needs to be thought out first before
drilling any holes and with my davits up at the stop point I can see out the back of the boat no problem and also stern light can be seen.
When I installed my davits I setup everything first before drilling and tried different setups before making the final decision.
But using the walk thru is a challenge for sure and could crawl under if had to
but don't really do that and when other boaters coming aboard while anchored
I just lower and tie dinghy along side.
My first 3 years I did not want davits because it would not allow using the walk thru as I backed into my slip at a marina.
But now at my dock I tie up along the side and so no problem and really
that is the only down side but have seen some boaters have the davits with the dinghy real high so to be able to use the walk thru.
I am 5'6'' and like looking out the back with plenty of good view,I could have made the davits with dinghy much higher but I like my setup.

Installed Martek Model 600 a few years ago. Very satisfied. Considerably less expensive then the Hunter davits, with a capacity more than double (600#).

Basic consideration is how high do you want the dingy. Most davits are low so the dingy is low. Some store it high so you can see under it and get on/off the boat at a dock with the dingy on. The Gauhauer in the post above looks high. I have Wells davits and my dingy rides high. I highly recommend the Wells davits but I think they are expensive (my boat had them when I purchased it). So decide what your priority is before buying.
