5 HP is a good fit

We did our taxes and although we have to pay state our federal is helping send my wife and daughter to Germany for 2 weeks so I will stick to the 4.5 hp for now
The Mercury(by Tohatsu) 5 or 6 HP Sail Power with the optional alternator would be worth considering. Bought new in 2013 I have about 80 hrs on one. Always starts on second pull and uses about a third of a gallon an hour at 2/3rds throttle and yields around 4.5 kts.

I have a manual start Honda 8hp, a little over sized for my boat but never less very reliable , quiet and always starts on the first pull. I would like to get the Tahatsu 6hp sail pro but its not in the plan for this year, but......if any one out there in the Hudson Valley needs a great outboard I be willing to let it go for a reasonable price and get the sail pro.

How about 1993 6hp evinrude twin? good bad? thank you Alan
We used an bit older 6 HP Johnson,(probably the same engine as your Evinrude), for many years on our original C-22. All I did was change the plugs every year,(2-cylinder), and gear oil. Great little outboard, but pushing the C-22 at hull speed, she burned 3/4 of a gallon per hour, vs our 4 stroke 6 HP Tohatsu Sail-Pro giving us close to 20 MPG.

Is there anyone else besides me that misses the smell of a 2-stroke?

The fuel consumption doesn't bother me and this motor im looking at is priced right for me. Im not in position for a new motor now plus the used market is low now. After all the reading ive done I believe my 4.5 hp will be too small. And yes I like the smell of a smoker too lol.

Pied piper: Last weekend I bought a newer C-22 and it came with a 1985 7.5-hp, 2-cylinder, 4-stroke Honda, that appears to have been lightly used. The motor is too heavy for my liking and, well, I've lusted over the Tohatsu SailPro for years. I've decided that I'm going to treat myself to a new Tohatsu this year; but first, I need to sell the Honda on Craigslist.

Based on your recent experience shopping for outboards, what kind of price do you think an older 7.5-hp Honda would sell for? Just trying to get some sense for what I can reasonably list it for. Thanks for any info you can provide.

bob , here in NC there is a 2009 6hp mercury 4stroke for $800. in florida there is a like new Nissan 6hp 4 stroke for $750 and the motor I am interested is a 93 6hp twin 2 stroke for $650. now for your area I would look at surrounding areas for your year and size motor to get an idea. If you plan to ship the motor that would broaden your sale. I have an 85 4.5hp mercury I may sell for around $300

Thank you - very useful information. Looks like I'll be paying a fair amount out-of-pocket for that new Tohatsu, even after selling the old motor. Oh well. Again, great info, and thank you.

Bob, I believe I paid $1,300. for my Tohatsu 6 HP 20" Sail-Pro. Caught it on sale with free shipping from an outfit on line I believe in TN. Delivered in about 5 days. GREAT little outboard!

If your Honda is clean and ready to go, I would think $600-$700 would be a good price out here. List it high, can always come down, plenty of photos, and be able to start it and run it when someone comes by. I would suggest fresh gas with Seafoam and just let it run all afternoon. Either in a tank at the house,(a clean garbage can is what I use), or on the boat tied up in the slip. List it on Craigslist in PHX, TUC, the inland empire, Mohave, etc.

Don, those 6hp tohatsu's are still at that price I see them all over the net. I am not in the position to spend that much right now so I will go used.
