2006 mercury 9.9. Its probably too big, but it runs good and cranks easily...and it was on the boat when I got it.

Exact same as RJD. 2014 6hp Tohatsu long shaft. Love it. Always starts easy, stingy on gas, never been past half throttle.

6HP Tohatsu "sailpro". Long shaft, high thrust prop and an alternator to help with battery charging. Runs literally all day long on about a gallon and a half if you don't keep it wide open. It'll push the boat about 6 knots at full throttle, but I run it at only half throttle which still gets me around 4.9 knots. Starts easy once broken in, usually two pulls, despite the fact I don't play the "run it dry" game. I do use only ethanol free gas in it though.

Honda 5-hp. To achieve really great fuel mileage, this engine has really tiny carb jets, so tiny that they clog very easily, requiring a carb cleaning / rebuild to fix the problem. Yes, even when running the motor dry after each use and even when adding stabilizers to the fuel. Several years ago I started using aviation fuel and haven't had a problem since. It costs quite a bit more than regular gas, but I only use about 6-gallons a year ... Much cheaper than carb repairs. Aviation gas is very stabile - never any varnishing / deposits or starting problems since I've been using it. Apparently this is a common problem with these motors - met a frustrated sailor last weekend who lost a whole day on the lake due to his Honda failing to start, apparently for the same reason. I cannot recommend this motor.

I had a Suzuki 2.5 with the same problem. Running it dry seemed to have solved it but until I started running it dry I'd have to clean it every time I used it. I'd never had a new boat motor before...sure was disappointing.

I was asking because I have an older 1987 mercury 4.5hp. I haven't run it on this boat I just got. My last cat 22 had a newer 6hp 4stroke Nissan and it was awesome but it went with the boat. I think this will be enough for this boat. I ran the Nissan at half throttle and that took me to hull speed.

When I get off my lazy duff and do my taxes I'm getting the Tohatsu 6hp Sail Pro.

We did our taxes and although we have to pay state our federal is helping send my wife and daughter to Germany for 2 weeks so I will stick to the 4.5 hp for now

Hey piedpiper! I have a mid 80's 4.5 merc that came on my boat about 6 years ago. The "iron horse". Run ethanol gas, don't run dry, haven't cranked it twice in the last two months with same gas from summer "I do put Stabil in there". Bet next months pay it will crank on the first or second pull. Except for maintenance of lower unit and water pump impeller no problems. Carb float developed pin hole once and had to change it. That little single cylinder has pushed me all over the ms coast!

5hp Mercury sail pro. Essentially a Tohatsu with a name change. Also apparently I heard only difference between a 5 and a 6 is the carb? I have the alternator too. This little guy starts on the second pull every time. Pushes boat well.

Wow.... I feel like I'm overcompensating with my 2004 15hp Merc 4 stroke long shaft....

But it came with the boat so I'm keeping it...

It's gotten my butt (boat) out of trouble a couple times so I'm OK with the extra hp...

Your PY26 is a bit larger than a Catalina 22, so I think your 15hp is just right. You'd proab do fine with a 9.9, but having the extra power for rough conditions is a bonus.

loosediamond,, so you have no problem as far as the lower HP ? that was really my only concern. I think the you can get away with the lower HP with the 2 strokes anyway

Gotta represent the Yamaha owners of the sailing world. Love my 8HP 4 stroke long shaft. Very reliable, power to spare, frugal on gas, and with normal daily run times, its alternator keeps my single deep cycle battery charged when cruising for days at a time. Couldn't be happier.
