Can you please ID this ketch?

Why do all the pics I am seeing of these Challenger boats look like the spars are raked forward (or in any case much too close to vertical)?
Noticed that, myself. Will ask the seller if he can explain.

Maybe the extra mizzen aft creates the need for some lee helm?

I had the chance (over the phone) to ask the owner about the mast rake, and from my end, it sounded as if his eyes glazed over, as if he had no clue about the rigging.

You know how you get those little hints about a person through your interactions with them, even through something as impersonal as an online forum? ;)

from the looks of that pic it won't make any diff now as you have the admiral grinning from ear to ear any way the boat looks like it would make a very good hacienda
That's not a photo of my wife (or me :D), but we'll see about the hacienda part.

Happy Valentine's Day.

The seller and I met this morning, and I finally got the chance to inspect below decks.

Took a few photos, then confabbed with the seller, who wanted to know my intentions regarding his baby girl.

I told him I was certainly interested, but it was really the first bluewater boat I've had the chance to look at, and still wanted to get down to San Carlos to see the selection there.

Maybe it was my shabby appearance, or the POS Toyota pickup I came in, IDK, but he wasn't too responsive to my effort to inspect much of anything. All in all, I was able to spend about an hour kicking the tires.

His asking price had increased 30% over the initial quote I'd gotten from his maintenance man, Ernesto, and he justified his asking price by talking about how much he's been dealing with automobiles and their prices.

It appears he's a tinkerer, and had supposedly rebuilt the Nissan diesel, the Velvetdrive tranny, new batts, and made quite a big deal about his quart of Brightsides Interlux poly paint.

I'm going to let him stew, and look at the 35-ish Ericson down the dock, in the meantime.

Dang, sfgary beat me to it. As soon as I saw the offset hatch and forward coach I know it was a Challenger. I have been wanting one of those for some time now.
Not sure if you want this one, only because the owner seems kind of recalcitrant, so far...

Too far away and no room at the Inn (marina). But I was going to suggest that you send someone with a BMW and dockers over to look at it. Then you might find if you suspicions about dress/car are correct. LOL

The seller was just not interested in allowing a deep inspection. Odd.

There was a half-inch of oil in the bilge, I pointed out a possible dismasting issue on one of his chainplates and fixed it, noted a pretty good drip from the stuffing box, but he had other things to do, rather than allow someone to critique the state of his boat. Maybe it's Valentines Day.

Whatever.

Do you think I was too hard on the guy?
you told it like it was..... i don't think so but i will say that the best thing in my case would be to move on and just fugetaboutit ...if he ever contacts you back which i doubt the asking price will be much lower i would think so just move on my friend you can't tie him to a chair

I thought his attempts to explain his reasoning with the used car analogy made him appear dubious.

I think the guy's looking for a buyer who knows as much (or less) about sailing than he does.

Which isn't very much, apparently. ;)
