Interesting survey... reminds me of the things I need to do in spring like add fuses, equalization, battery monitor... etch. I'm embarrassed! Hopefully you will let us know when we can read the results somewhere...I want to see if anyone else never equalized there still-working golf cart batteries from 2006...doh!

Showed me how little I know about batteries. Never heard of equalization, temp compensation. Always more to learn.

Hi All, I am working on a few articles for marine publications and would like to gather some data on marine batteries and their use. The survey is quick and easy to complete. Please be honest in your answers. Dishonesty or exaggerating serves no purpose to the data I am looking for so please, please, please answer as honestly as you can. Please note many answers can have multiple boxes checked. Marine Battery Use Survey (LINK)

I filled out the survey (best I could as I have a trailer boat) but I now have a bit of unusual case.

My boat lives in Lake Havasu Az and I live in Denver so most of the time the boat just sits and then gets used for a few days to a week a handful of times per year.

Twice now in the last 3 or 4 years, I have gone to the boat and found the two six volt golf cart batteries at less than 8 volts because for some reason the 10 watt solar and charge controller had some issue. I wonder how much damage this did to the battery. The survey didn’t ask how many times the battery was way over discharged.. maybe I’m the only one this ever happens to..

Also, the batteries sit in the boat in one of the hottest places on the planet during the sumer..The 10 watt solar panel and temp compensated controller keep the batteries charged.. but I wonder what those really fricken hot summer days do to battery life.. But.. its the same problem all the people with cars have who live in that area.

Started, but quickly realized my very limited use wouldn`t apply to almost all of your questions.

Done; helped me realize that perhaps I can use some additional education with battery use and charging. I do get at least four to five years use out of a set so I really don't have a lot to complain about. Looking forward to reading your articles when they get published. I'm sure you will let us know when that takes place. Thanks

Done! The boat has a 170 AH house bank, but very light loads about 15AH per day, all LED, no refridge etc.I try to keep the discharge under 10%.
