Re: PNW Weather

We also sail rain or shine warm or cold. We have wet weather gear and warm clothes.

Thanks everyone

Hi Ken, have patience. Our first boat, an H28, we bought it from the PO in the Everett marina on E dock. Sailed her for three years, then upgraded to our current boat that we purchased from the PO in Semiahmoo.

We did not get along with the Everett marina staff of the time, so we moved to Shelter Bay and have been happy ever since. Look around, check the ads, make a list of the things you want or need on your new boat and before long your dream just magically appears. Good luck.
Yes, we've been looking a bit. We are in fact on "E" dock now. We haven't yet seen just what we are after, but looking still. I posted this thread because I don't often see many heading out with rain in the forecast. Being the oddball that I am, I do put on fowlies and even fish in the fall.

Hi Ken, other than a pilot house boat, cockpit enclosure, hot water heater, etc., what else is on the "want" list?

Lots of good deals out there. Market is pretty soft. H290 is a very nice boat with all the amenities, plus fridge, etc.

as it doesnt rain here except in summer, and all rain here has a name associated with it, except the nocturnal mid to end december stormcell, we do not go out in summer..
with 21 named storms this past summer , 8 of which were MAJOR furycames, sailing in summer is limited to dock riding and emergency transportation to another place, which doesnt happen in summer, or joy riding to see how the boat handles in storms--not my cupcake--i like sailing prefrontals, but when the calm comes before the storm, i like to hunker down and watch the weather from comfort of a safe harbor.

we have to consider sun here.. i will be placing a cockpit cover of some kind on this boat for long range sailing in sunshine and for protection against the occasional squall and sundry rain cell, but mostly for protection against the sun.

Actually the H290 may work quite well for us, but I've limited our search so far to boats I don't need to transport (Puget Sound and surrounding waters.) It would have the additional advantage of less costly moorage.
Another thing we hope for is a decent size bed that we can leave made up. Our present bed is the middle of the salon.

So far we are limiting ourselves to a 32 foot slip (due me being cheap). So far we've looked at Catalina 30, Hunter Vision 32, Hunter 30, and a few others that we quickly discounted. I'm also wanting to keep it below $35 or $40K.

Our plan is to keep looking. Meanwhile I need to empty our present boat and do some cleaning to get it ready to show.

I've found this post interesting seeing comments from those who don't have 40 degree f rain.
I never actually considered warm (summer) rain when I posted this.

Hi Ken, when it came time to sell our H28, we did just that. Dock appeal plays a big role. Posted a "For Sale By Owner" sign and she was gone within a week.

To answer your question, only when it rains. We sail when it rains, when it doesn't and have even sailed when it snowed. (Not fun, but really kewl) Dress for the weather and you'll be fine. I bought a North Face shell parka about 10 years ago and used it for my sailing foulies. If it's cold out, I zip in a polar fleece. If it's really cold I wear a wool sweater underneath. If it's warm, it's just the shell. If it's really warm I just hang out in a swim suit.
