mexico is still a good place to go and be safe--no problems here--only from usa with homeless despot and wallys and such being frauded. with good planning, or even out of dire need, things actually work ..
there are ways to get stuff done here despite the rumored difficulties.. rumors are merely that. rumors.

I feel sorry for you guys that have been burned by these scumbags.
I posted some No-No's earlier but, I did not add the following precautions: that I take.

If possible, NEVER keep financial info on you computer. I NEVER DO!
NEVER do a transaction via a smart phone when making a purchase at a checkout counter. Thieves can have a pocket device to pick up your transmission.
REMEMBER, if you have financial info on your PC, have your files ENCRYPTED.
There are programs you can purchase for this.
If having to keep this info, add a separate/external drive that IS ENCRYPTED to store this info.
Lock it out or disconnect this drive when updated.

NEVER store usernames, passwords, account info & CC numbers etc. on your PC. thieves can plant a bug (like a Key logger) to look for these & steal your info.

ALWAYS, have at least three different usernames & passwords that can be changed/rearranged periodically or, as needed. Keep a hidden list written down somewhere to avoid problems with remembering what goes with what.

Besides these, make variances that you can change at a moment's notice, for security purposes.

Past this, it's all STILL a crap-shoot. It's a **** WORLD man.
Do as much as you can.................

Also, not to endorse or promote, but Bank America has a free service called 'Shop-Safe' that is associated with your credit card. If you are making an on-line purchase, you go to the BofA website and generate a new single use CC number that comes with expiration date and its own little security code number. You determine the max it is good for and use the new number. Its billed to your regular CC account.

Lehigh,

Tell me that's not a picture of your boat pal.
I hate low tides.

I was not aware of "Shop safe" from BOA. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.

Seems to me discover may also have that shop safe thing. Don't take my word for it though. I thought I saw my mom use it. I'm not sure why more CC companies don't offer this.

Ladies, don't drop your purse at work and leave it unattended. My wife had her cards picked out when she stepped away. It's easy to learn people's habits.

I don't think debit cards carry the same protection credit cards do. At least that's what they told us when hers got picked.

I say pursue any thief to the full extent of the law. If you find your card was used, get a police report immediately and have the police meet you where the purchase was made. There is a chance it will be on the DVR. Call the store to see if they have one and for how long before they overwrite it.

File a civil suit against them regardless of what the state or municipality does if that's an option.

In the back of your card where it says to sign, put in bold print "Ask to see ID". If the clerk doesn't ask to see it remind them to look every time. I realize now, the stores don't want their clerks touching your card and insist you swipe it on your own.

Get the app for your card and check it daily.

More justice :)

My card was used in Homestead Fl. At a series of gas stations and each purchase was 100 or 125 bucks. I realize that they have upper limits on purchases, around 100 bucks or so. But who can buy 500 dollars worth of gas in one day, I'm thinking that maybe there is a co conspirator working at the station. ( two charges were at the same Sunaco station ) So I call the Homestead police dept. to tell them my thoughts, worthless or not. Hell, I look up and find the non emergency number. Guess what? No one answered the damn phone.

I wrote that "picture ID" on my Visa charge card. The clerk asks for a photo ID and i show my Visa debit card, which has the same picture as the charge card- and they accept it.
