I think we need to go back in time, and to another part of the world. Lets mark these damn thieves for life. A big tattoo on their forehead, or maybe cut off their hand. Something, or anything. I had my debit card compromised again. This is the second time in 5 years. Last time they were in LA. Bought a big screen TV among other things. That time happened the day Gustav hit New Orleans, and there was no phone or internet service, so they just went crazy till the bank shut down the card. This time on Thanksgiving. And I didn't look at my account that day. This time in Miami. At least these crooks were a little on the dumb side. Only bought gas. Three tanks of gas on Thanksgiving day. I didn't loose any money before, and won't this time, but it is a royal PITA to have to deal with this crap. I know that tattooing thief on their forehead or cutting off their hands would be considered by most to be barbaric, but I really don't care. Or maybe, put them in a small room with handcuffs and shackles and give me five minutes in the room with a baseball bat. In case you haven't figured it out, I'm pissed.

I think

I think it's going to get worse before it gets better. The bank told me this morning that the going rate for a stolen card # was 50 bucks.

Re: I think

Its sucks that this has happened to you - I've been there twice so far myself.

I rest assured that the scum that does evil will pay in the next life if not in this one...

My business credit card was used in India on Tuesday. Bank called me within 15 minutes of it happening.. Card cancelled. Royal PITA because new card takes 7-14 days and I leave Wed for the Caribbean....

Why credit cards don't requires PIN numbers, in order to be used, is beyond me....

What I do

Mainesail, what I do now is. Since I use primarily a debit card, ( which I can also use as a credit card ) and i had it burned once before, I talked to the bank about that. Specifically what could I do if for example I was a long way from home, and my card got compromised and cancelled. The simple solution is I now always carry a debit card, and an ATM card. So at least I can go to an ATM machine and get cash to survive the 7 to 10 days it takes to replaced the card.

My bank is also pretty quick on the uptake, but I still hate banks.

Sorry to hear of the inconvenience, both of you.

This has probably happened to most everyone that uses a card or cards on a regular basis.
However, over the years every bank that I have had the cards with are able to overnight the new card to me. I'm not endorsing any bank over another, but among those getting the new cards overnight were Chase, HSBC, Bank of America, and even Amex. Having to wait a week or two is not acceptable.

Before they put a damn chip in me, they will have to chase me down and I will not be an easy guy to find. Can you say Belize, Hondorus, Guatemala, etc. And if they find me and somehow manage to install a chip, I will find a way to cut the dam thing out. But your right. HELLO WAR ROOM

that's been my experience, too - the banks that cancel the card and then won't overnight a replacement lose me as a customer.

Sad news, it does seem to be getting worse.
We have been using EMV cards in Canada for a few years now and they seem to help some times. Unfortunately my US funds card from the same bank does not use a chip. Travelling south from Canada to Florida has compromised the card the last two years. The bank has been able to courier us a new card within 3 days at no charge.

I'm told the new EMV cards are coming to the U.S. in 2015. Having another pin to remember is a pain though.

More here,

No hope in sight. Stolen credit card cartels openly advertise and sell guaranteed card numbers on the internet, even having open auction bidding for large lots of prime cards. Mostly seems to be run by Russian cartels.

Sail,

Home depot had their system hijacked recently. Having made purchases during that time, I immediately cancelled my card. I had a new one in five days & I decided to look into CC theft more. Here's what I found partner:

Always make a credit card purchase rather than a debit card.
Never give your card number to a faceless person over the phone.
Never use your card for an internet purchase to a faceless person/site if possible.
Never give out the 3-digit security number.
Never, Never give out you SS#, it is only necessary for very few accounts like banks.
I don't know why medical forms ask for this. I tell them this is NOT necessary.
For internet purchases, I only use PayPal. My number was hacked once but their security caught this & informed me immediately. The purchase NEVER went thru.

Security measures in place are ALWAYS playing catch-up to these pukes.
If I ever catch one, he will pay for all those I didn't find.
Cut off their arms to the shoulders & noses & lips so they cant' use a keyboard.

Most thefts originate from Eastern Europe & Asia.
Never make a card purchase as a debit card if possible.
If POSSIBLE, get cash from the ATM for purchasing anything.

Check security settings on your PC's to never show your physical location. No tracking & beware of ANY sites (especially social networking) that require usernames & passwords unless they are a trusted site & an account setup is necessary.

Your security depends largely on what you do.

I've had my CC info stolen many times, and have had my bank account emptied. It sucks. Thankfully, I am with a bank whose service is top notch. Not only did they put every penny back in the account, they were able to get a new card to me each time.

I agree with using Paypal when possible. I this new era of digital everything, it will always be possible to hack a number. I'd rather have someone steal my credit card than break into my house.

Incidentally, I travel for a living and after 26 years of doing it, had a vehicle break in that cost my employer over $100,000 in stolen equipment two weeks ago. First time that's ever happened to me. Even though it wasn't my gear, I felt extremely violated.

at least you guys were inside usa when this happened..not that that is a good thing--is a bad day when stuff happens to your bank account.
last year i needed to obtain 2 new cards due to some fraud event occurring in usa in walmart, kmart, and other similar stores. (one card two times within 6 months)
so it took 2 months to get the first card, and 2 weeks for the second, but not before a loooonnnngggg involved discussion with bank and those to whom i needed to pay obligations... is fun.
at least my bank knows i am in mexico and not to cancel card for no reason...
i even added momma as a signatory so i can straighten stuff out without having to go hypertensive ...
and so now my bank and i are still on speaking terms and by telephone..i do not use online banking for anything at all.
is safer this way.
i use GREAT CARE in wallys had homeless despot...same with other package stores...
good luck phil, i hope this settles out smoothly for ye.

fortunately i now have a paypal credit card i can use for 1 usd each transaction, a slong a si has money in that account. worked great for my dead brother trip to phx last sept.

i will be augmenting my usa banking with a bank here in mexico--i believe scotia is world wide, so i plan on opening an account there so i dont have to concern my self with the idiocy of thieves defrauding folks in package stores....

Bad news. You already have the chip. Want worse news? You bought and paid for it yourself, and willfully carry it in your pocket every day. Commonly called a cell phone, most in this country wouldn't leave the house without it. My new IPhone 6 already has an app to pay for your purchase just by tapping the phone at the checkout.

Think this is scary? Crap, that's old stuff. The technology is beyond frightening............and most folks have no idea. Just sheep. Investigate beyond Van eck phreak king, or computer monitor emanations.

BTW, I despise conspiracy idiots. The truth is much more unsettling...

screw the chip.
mexico is still a good place to go and be safe--no problems here--only from usa with homeless despot and wallys and such being frauded. with good planning, or even out of dire need, things actually work ..
there are ways to get stuff done here despite the rumored difficulties.. rumors are merely that. rumors.

:D Apple must have come to some agreement.

The credit card companies are rallying against any payment system that does an end-run around them, as Bitcoin does with governments.
