I am considering purchase of 21 ft oday yngling open cockpit. need instructions re bolt on keel. owner says "bolt" not supplied". how does this keel "bolt on"?

O'DAY didn't build the YNLING for long and I suspect they built the boat under contract to the Association, to the Class Specs. I'm a bit unsure about the keel attachment on hte O'DAY-built boats, since if memory serves me correct, the O'DAY-built boats had a different shaped keel from what I see on hte current boats, but it may be that the Class Design changed?
Current builder of the YNGLING in the USA is DeWolf Boats.

INSTALLING KEEL -- JAVELIN ONLY
You will need help for this job. Remove the center floorboard, and raise the hull enough to allow the keel to be hung.
Slip the 6 keel bolts thru the holes in the keel (the two 4" bolts go forward and the four 3½” ones, aft), and slip an "O"
ring over each bolt. Place the keel in position under the hull. Bedding compound should be inserted
between the keel flange and the hull. One man is needed in the boat to put washers and nuts on the bolts as they
are shoved thru. Set the nuts up with a 11/16 inch socket wrench, using moderate force. Replace the floorboard,
but leave it loose, in case the keel bolts need tightening a little to stop possible leaks when the boat is floating.
Caution: The keel is an iron casting, and therefore extreme care should be taken that the 6 bolts are drawn up a

This Was A Great Help. Are You Sure The Keel On The O'day Ynling Is Constructed As You Described? The Websites You Suggested Do Not Have Any Information On This.
Well, as I say....... I suspected that the YNGLING keel might be different from the other O'DAYs with keels, but it was the best I could come up with, and is pretty much typical for other builders at that time. However, I really don't know enough about the YNGLING to remember how the keel was installed. I think the new ones have the keel molded as part of the hull?? I just looked at some pictures that I have of a 1975 YNGLING (didn't realize O'DAY was still building them that year) and the keel definitely appears to be cast-iron and bolted-on. Problem is that none of the pics show any bolts, maybe they thread into the keel rather than being inserted from below as on hte Javelin and Mariner/Rhodes 19? I think I'd still suggest contacting either the Class Association with htis question, or maybe the current builder. Unfortunately, there are not many YNGLING owners here, you might be one of only 2 (or less).
If O'DAY was still building hte YNGLING as late as 1975, then it might be worth giving Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine a call (508) 644-3001. He was the Parts Dept. Manager at O'DAY from 1973-89 and now runs a little shop in Assonet, MA supplying parts and advice to O'DAY owners. He MIGHT still have some little scrap of information that would reveal the answer to your question.

The keel shall be of cast iron, cast from an official ISAF Pattern.
The weight of the keel, excluding any coating, shall be 310kg plus/minus 5 kg. The shortest distance from the centre of gravity of the keel to the top of the flange shall not be more than 500mm.
The keel may be galvanized and/or covered by any material.
The keel shall be fastened to the hull by not less than eight stainless steel threaded studs and threads of minimum diameter 11mm. The bolts at the forward and aft end of the keel shall be on the centerline, the remainder shall be staggered. The length of the studs shall be such that not less than 15mm of thread protrudes above the nuts so that the hull lifting eye and a Gyradius Rig may be attached above the nuts.
The keel may be coated with any non-metallic material and be faired and polished provided the finished keel complies with the Class Rules and Measurement Diagram
