This week I worked with Kermit on installation of the Hummingbird Piranha Max 175 fish finder with depth. The transducer sometimes referred to as a puck by some comes with instructions to attach to the underside or transom of the boat without any mention of shooting thru the hull. I called tech at Hummingbird and they said it could work shooting thru the hull. They suggested two part epoxy but that along with 5200 or as some would say Satans Glue would not be recommended by me in the event of removal.
the viable place of attachment is adjacent to the bilge area or pump/float switch on the stbd side. First you have to sand smooth as much down to the fibereglass although some gel is in the small void or curvature areas is ok. The question was to go either mineral bath, 4200 or using the plummers putty.
The key folks is to use a lot to make sure when emersing the puck or transducer into whatever you use, make sure there are no air voids as that will mess up the sending unit.
I said what the heck to use plummers putty. After sanding and cleaning with acetone to insure no water, I applied a rather large goop of plummers putty and emersed the puck into it and built it up around the puck to hold it in place pushing down close to the hull ensuring no air bubbles. Not only did it hold but easy to use and the puck worked like a charm with the readings. The plummers puty is cheap and thank you goes to Chris Patterson for the suggestion. It made me a believer. Sorry Kermit about beating you to the punch.
