how do you lower the jib? (ProFurl)

Some stitching has come loose on my head sail so I need to remove it. I unfurled the sail and released the jib halyard but nothing happened. Tried pulling the sail down, but still nothing. I couldn't get it to move at all. Is there a trick to lowering the sail?

It should just pull down. The luff tape might be tight; if nothing us wrapped at the head just give it a tug. Squirt McLube on it on the way back up.

Are you sure there is not a jam cleat on the side of the mast that has the halyard captured? Happens to mine.

Hopefully, there is not a kink in the foil that is pinching the luff tape. Also try to determine if the halyard is fouled at the head or caught between the masthead sheave and the sidewall of the masthead. Ron already mentioned the jam cleat at the side of the mast, and make sure the spinlock cleat on the cabin top is fully open.

Dropped my jib yesterday, and it slid all the way down with no assistance from me. I use MacLube on the luff tape every time I put the sail up in the spring, it does help.

There is a bearing sleeve in the top swivel. When I first got my boat the genoa would not come down due to the wear in the bearing which skews the swivel. Since it was at the end of the season I dropped the mast, removed the genoa while on the ground, removed the swivel, and replaced the bearing sleeve. Everything was fine after that. You may have the same problem. I have pictures if required.

You could do a mast climb and try to loosen the swivel but you may still have to remove the swivel which means dropping the mast.

Here are some pics of the worn item. The replacement cost is around $10 from Profurl.
I used a hacksaw blade to cut the old bearing out(carefully). Then press fit the new bearing in place using a homemade press. Doesn't take more than an hour to complete.

Thanks to all. Great info...and I am not offended by obvious recommendations. The halyard has no obstructions to the point that it enters the bottom of the mast. Just to confirm that I was releasing the correct line I looked at the top of the mast with binoculars and the color matches the jib halyard. I guess it is time to climb. Ugh.

O40 right? New boat??

It's really hard to imagine that any part of the furler would have worn in that short of time. Did you personally put the sail on? Was it easy or hard? I'd really try and pull it down. Straddle the foil, and clap your hands on both sides of the sail. Pull down hard by the feeder. You can't hurt anything by trying.

I just bought a new Profurl. I haven't installed it yet but thought I would just throw this in. Looking at my manual it looks like the sail head is attached to the halyard swivel and the swivel is then attached to the jib halyard. By any chance did the swivel come off the top extrusion? It could happen if the extrusions were not cut correctly to the proper luff length.

There is an upper stop, screwed into the end of the extrusion, designed to prevent just that from happening.

And if the screw somehow disappeared?. If he can see the swivel still on the extrusion then it's ok. It's funny that he is unable to move the sail down at all. Maybe the Profurl wrapstop got things tangled up somehow.

Its possible. But then the screw and part would have to gone missing, AND the foil would have been cut to short.

It it was tangled the sail would not unfurl.

Just throwing out ideas is all. Not sure it the OP ever had his headsail down before. I know the Profurls are designed to be installed relatively easy by the diy'er but the installation manual on mine is very vague.

Oh for sure, me too! ;^)

Its a new boat. I'm guessing the dealer put the sail on and it's never been off. I'm figuring that it is just very tight and will come down with some effort. But who knows???

Ok....I missed that it was a new boat. For what he paid he should be hoisting the dealers butt up there. :)
