Anchor trip Line, how to?

How do you know when to use one?
First, look at your charts. There are a lot of annotations as to whats on the bottom.
S for sand, Cl for clay, etc.

There are a lot of guidebooks and websites that describe anchorages and often make mention if there are different problems with holding. If you're going to a popular anchorage where a trip line might be a problem, there will be info out there. If you found that place that nobody knows about then perhaps a trip line is in order. Maybe.

Short of the possibility of swinging over your own, these other excuses strike me as more of an argument than good advice.[/QUOTE]

Or knowledge. Having anchored among thousands of boats in hundreds of anchorages, I've seen maybe 3 or 4. Lots of lazy, stupid boaters out there! Whatever, suit yourself

Yep last Nov at 0500 I could hear the line pulling taunt, then snap. We looked for the float before hauling anchor and couldn't find it. Anchor aboard I made a slow turn in the narrow channel and needed reverse to keep off the bank. Somehow we didn't snag it because we saw it float by when we went forward again. Close call.

If you use a trip line, do NOT use a fender for the float. Or at least use a long enough line to reach the bottom. Just saying. No personal knowledge that the fender will float your anchor off the bottom leaving you with just chain dragging.
Ha! No personal knowledge I'm sure, but you had a friend who did that? Wink

There you go, sarcasm should only be used as often as a trip line!?
