We're purchasing an '85 H31 that is in need of an autopilot replacement. We're new sailboat owners so any advice is greatly appreciated. Looking for a good quality system at a reasonable cost that's not overly complicated to install ourselves. Ran across a Ray Marine evolution and CPT wheel pilot. Any advice? Thanks...

For what it's worth, I have a Raymarine XP-5 that was used for a couple of seasons before I installed a new linear drive. I also have a spare wheel drive that was used for half a season before the XP-5 was installed. The only thing you need is the cable that runs from the course computer to the control head.

Make sure whatever you buy it is compatible with your current or planning to buy MFD.

Just installed a Raymarine Evolution Autopilot with P70 display on my H30. Absolutely love it. Install was completely straightforward (as long as you have some basic DIY skills). No calibration is required; the system "learns" your boat's characteristics and optimizes its steering logic as you sail. (Only issue I had was that the instructions that came with my unit had an outdated calibration procedure that didn't work. Had to call factory to clear this up, but tech was quick to respond and knew the issue exactly.)

So, totally pleased.

Great --thanks, that helps.

Kappy, are you looking to sell the XP5 system? I currently have an old but function Simrad WP10 but one never knows how long that baby will hang on. If you are considering selling, send me a pm and we can discuss it.

Hi Guys/Girls,
I have just purchased a 2003 Hunter Legend 356 to which I wish to fit an autopilot. The Raymarine new generation looks good, but I don't want a wheel drive, but a linear drive.
Can anyone help with suggestions of type/model and installation photos/experience please?
Regards,
Neil

I use a CPT wheel pilot. My Legend 37.5 did not have any auto helm. I wanted a strong, simple wheel pilot. I didn't want a complicated hook up, etc. I also don't have a hard wired chat plotter. I use an IPAD with Isailor. The CPT is a 1 horse power motor, and hold the helm steady in 25 knots of wind easy. The customer service is stellar from Jeff at CPT.

Here is one vid sailing back from Baltimore using the CPT:

I am curious where everyone is installing the ev-1 sensor. It should be near the centerline and three feet from metal mass. Not an easy task on many boats. I put mine in galley center locker which requires a lot of extra cable. However I have seen two other installs in the engine compartment. One aft of the fuel tank and one between the fuel tank and engine.

Thanks for the great pic Paul. How far is you ev-1 from engine and batteries? Any issues from that? I tried using a handheld compass but never really found a perfect area.

4 feet from engine, 2 feet from water heater and 16 inches from ss rudder shaft.
I'm showing you how I installed my auto pilot, if you want to know how to install ask Maine Sail or Stu from c34 web
