Wow. They should put RFID tags in each container. That way NORAD can track sea junk like they track space junk.

i don't understand why weighing them is such an issue...the truckers have to weigh there loads at DOT scales....the weigh tickets should be with the containers...make more than one copy so all involved would have the weight.....my guess is that the shipping company's are padding the weight to the payers and will loose some over stated revenue if they have to come clean .......i am not saying that this is the fact just my speculation......

ha ha..

"The French environmental group Robin des Bois said ...."

LOL

Robin des Bois is the French way of saying Robin Hood. It is hard to take a group seriously when " Robin Hood" said he is going to sue you.... made me laugh.

One of the things I fear most when going out in the open ocean. I came very close to hitting one on a Newport - Bermuda race in 2008. They float just under the surface and disrupt the chop, but you have to be watching for them.

Later in the article they say: Not knowing how much your cargo weighs can introduce all sorts of problems in terms of the stress a vessel must endure at sea. If containers are heavier than reported in can put stresses on the boat that can lead to failure

thats why i said what i did about weighing them at the scales ...i see no reason why they cant calculate the weight from there weigh tickets and be better informed about loading the weight to maintain good balance ......

I don't know what the heaviest to lightest range is, but the heaviers on the bottom would help keep the center of gravity down a bit. Maybe not much, but when you have that many stacked, it's got to be better.

i agree....i think thats why they put the lead in the keel .....don't know if shipping has improved or not in the last 200 years ....now days they loose containers and 200 hundred years ago the lost the whole ship...seems to me that trash is trash no matter what kind if box you put it in i am not saying that cargo is trash when it leaves port but when it gets lost  at sea it then becomes trash

I was hoping for a container full of twinkies although I imagine the packaging would have leaked. Can't think of much that could be inside that wouldn't be ruined by the salt water.
