Some winter projects. One is re varnishing with Dalys seafin team oil. Would like to use this on the wood floor veneer. What is the best way to clean this veneer first. Teak cleaner or TSP.etc, Any idea's.

Sand it

I ended up having to sand mine (be careful!) because of stains and because it was half covered in varnish and half not. I used a belt sander very carefully which worked great. I did end up putting some marks right on the edges where I had to hit it with the end of the sander but the varnish covered all. By that I mean, only I notice the spots. Looks fabulous!

Then I looked at the step and said, crap!, now that looks real bad and did it too!

The floor looks nice. Am worried about sanding it given how thin the veneer is. Maybe that is the way to go. I know what you mean. I clean something up and the next thing that looked OK , now needs fixing.

John23883, (floor looks great by the way), what is the round access plate in the lower center-right of the picture for and where did you purchase it? My sole needs replaced (don't have one right now) but I have a long teak log I am thinking of ripping on the band saw and using. What is the lighter color in between the teak made of? Sorry for so many questions.

hello

Murphy's oil soap is always the best cleaner for any type of wood.... veneer is tricky to sand and get all the varnish off, and not leave gouges in it, unless you do it all by hand...

I sand the teak on my boat by hand, then coat it with Murphy's oil soap... I wipe it several times to make sure I get all the excess off... then give it a couple of days and apply teak oil to finish the job... but that is just me...

sincerely

I had sanded mine, then vacumed and wiped it down with a tack cloth. Over two weeks I applied teak oil three times. Once it was all soaked in, I wiped it down with a fresh tack cloth. I found murphys oil soap to leave a ever so thin layer of residue which helped keep the floor looking nice. Each year I take the opportunity to wash it down and apply one to two coats of teak oil to keep the floor looking healthy. There are two stains which I don't dare to sand out in fear of going past the veneer. They make it look homey and natural.

hello

all the teak on my boat is on the outside.... all the wood inside my boat is mohagany... the mohagany is all varnished and easy to clean.... where as the teak I have to work at it several times a year to keep it looking good, and not old grey weathered looking....

sincerely

Here's your answers, Derf123

  1. I have no idea where the access port came from, I just assumed the boat came that way from the factory. I unscrewed it, opened it and there was nothing there??
  2. Theoretically the sole is teak and holly, so maybe it is holly. The two woods are definitely different because I just stained the whole thing and that's the way it came out.

On the 26 and early 260 , real teak and holly soles were used. It is layered veneer and if you sand, be very careful.

The later is a composite materials to imitate teak and holly and again be careful.

Wood care on doors and cabinets inside the boat

I am wondering what the best way is to give the internal wood the original new shine again? It looks kind of dull and spotty on my boat. Since it is no teak it might have to be light sanded and new stained. Usually I would stain it with Natural 209 MINWAX wood finish and seal it later with MINWAX polyurethane clear semi-gloss.
Don't know if that is a good idea, if it works on a boat. Any suggestions are appreciated.
