Nice to see a fresh venture 21 thread. I bought mine last year and am sailing it for a second season after some minor work to the standing rigging. This year I did most of the electrical, running rigging, and bought a new jib. AND also added a topping lift which I highly recommend. Painting is something I have been avoiding like the plague. I would almost rather sell it and buy another one before taking that on. After reading this I am a little more inspired, but just a little. Good luck and happy sailing!

Ok I started sanding and i have made a few discoveries
1 there is a lot of sanding involved
2 the former painter did a horible job
3 most of the cracks are in the gel coat

hear are my questions
can i paint over the gel coat with longlasting results
do i fill low spots with primer then paint top coat i plan on using rustoleum
this is my first prodject of this type and i am just taking the cracks out and the bad paint of the gel coat for now untill i decide how to proceed
also i am taking the nonskid off so i can go back with the sand variety

First wash off any wax with a strong detergent (laundry or dish machine soap will do)... rinse and let dry... then lightly sand with 60 grit using an orbital sander, then pressure washed off the dust... then painted using the roll and tip method. Came out great (see pics in above post).

If you ware wanting to fill in gouges and dings... do that before you start painting. Spider cracks are no big deal. The rustoleum will fill those.

I've done this on four different boats... always good results... here are some pics of a Mac 22

And the red bottom of this Balboa is also Rustoleum

I see that you have made one half of the seating area into a larger bed. I think this would make sitting in the cabin possible with the top slid open. Was that your intent? I see that you added a 2 by 3 to the wall that leads outside the cabin, what is the purpose? Is this for a table support? this is in reference to rgrangers pics.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you are talking about these two pics....

The first pic is the V-birth. There is a compression post that also belongs there but I removed it for painting. I put it back in before I actually sailed the boat. The second one shows a 2" x 6" across the companionway bridge deck. That is supporting the winch that is used to raise and lower the keel.

Let me know if I didn't answer your questions or if I misunderstood what you were asking.

To rgranger, I was looking at the pic that is in a oval frame on the bottom row of the pics you posted originally. It appears that half of your floor space in the cabin, right of the keel trunk, as you are looking outside is covered. I also have a 2 by 6 in the outside seating area that supports the keel winch, I find this to be a comfortable place to sit. I really can not sit inside the cabin as it is too short.

Ah

This pic... The arrangement of the births was original. All I did was clean and repaint the interior. The 2"x3" at the companionway hatch is just a place to put your foot as you enter or exit.... a step. I guess you could make a table support. And I've seen people who have drilled holes in their 2"x6" winch support board and make cup holders .... :D

My whatever-you'd-call-this was busted up pretty bad. The PO had hit something and patched it together with black silicone. Looked/worked OK for a while but eventually I had to do something. So, I shaped the front with clay, layered on three layers of glass, sanded, filled, sanded and primed. Last, I used spray-on truck bed liner, the kind that crinkles when it dries. It created a mottled finish that wears like iron. If they sold it in colors, it would make great non-skid paint, I think. But, at any rate, of it gives any other shoe-string sailors an idea that will save them some money, have at it!
