Hey folks, after 6 weeks fixing, repairing and scrubbing off moss, slime and mud I got the mast up, rigging relatively tight and went sailing for the first time in 20 years! The handling was a bit cumbersome at times and I believe it's due to the way I ran the lines for the Jib and Main Sheet. Does any one have any close up pictures for way they ran the ropes for the Jib (I'm think I'm using the genoa 'cause it's almost the size of the main sail) and the main sheet?

I also think I'm missing pulley's on the boom. I hooked the main sheet to a 'clamp' on the mast, ran it to a double pulley on at the end of the boom, to the starboard pulley, back to the boom and to the port pulley. But it seems to sag and catch on the cabin hatch if I let it get too loose.

As for the Jib...do you run the lines outside of the shrouds/life lines to the winches on the gunwales? It's the only way that looks logical to me. I used oneof the smaller jibs (one's real small) and ran it inside the shrouds to cleats on the cabin. Any pics would be great! You can either post or email them to me at jay_sauls@yahoo.com.

hello

congrats on your boat... it was great being out there on the water on your own boat wasn't it ?... I know the 1st day I got mine out on the water, I felt like I could sail forever... it was wonderful... I am still fixing up and repairing my Mac25, and i have had it almost 1 year now... i have the insides all taken out of it.... I am rebuilding the cabin ... as my son says, it will be a camper on the water when I am finished....but I am doing it how I want it for me to spend time on a lot.....

the main sheets should attach to the middle or end of the boom, to control where the boom is or how much it moves... I have a mid boom bail for my mainsheets, and my mainsheets connect to a traveler n front of the cabin entrance...

a jib sail does not overlap the mast, and the jib sheets will stay inside the shrouds and they will pass through some fairleads on your cabin top... a genoa will overlap beyond your mast, and the genoa sheets will go outside your shrouds... the genoa sheets will go back to a set of fairleads attached to gencars, then back to your winches... they were set up to use cleats to tie off the genoa sheets...

I have enclosed a few pictures for you to reference...

sincerely
Jess

Jess, thanks for the info. It was the Genoa that I was must confused on. I'm wondering if I'm missing equipment due to the fact that the only place to run the lines on the Genoa is to the winches.

Fig. 16 is similar (the ropes/pulleys) to what I have on my boom. It attaches from the masthead to the boom, about 3' down the boom. What is this things purpose and how tight should I tighten it? I pulled it snug and let it be. Not sure how snug to make it, if at all.

I think you're describing a boom vang?

Are you sure it's attached to the masthead, and not to the base of the mast?

Sorry, base of mast...that's be an odd rigging to be at the top of the mast!

Boom vang, most likely.
It's used mostly when running downwind, because the end-of-boom mainsheet cannot provide enough downforce on its own.
