Mainsheet cleat

Newbe question. I singlehand most of the time and would like to replace open V mainsheet
cleat on cabin top with cam cleat. Anyone done this? Do you need to
drill through cabin top for bolts or is clutch base wood? Thanks for
any answers.

No need to even replace it. Just add a foot plate sandwiched underneath (I used Corian because I had some, marine board would work too) mount a new swivel behind.
Original screws are long enough and if it ever fails you have the original one there as a backup.

Us an open cam cleat

Unscrew you jam cleat, get a piece of starboard and longer screws and re-mount your jam cleat on it and then add the cam cleat aft of that. That way you have the holding power of the jame cleat with the convenience of the cam cleat.

That clam cleat is the dumbest thing ever. I replaced ours with a sheetstopper, left open when sailing. More $$, but a much better secure fairlead to the mainsheet cabintop winch - no longer need two hands to run the mainsheet.

I leave the mainsheet on the winch. I can't imagine having to unload a mainsheet from a cam cleat when it's windy.

I leave the mainsheet on the winch. I can't imagine having to unload a mainsheet from a cam cleat when it's windy.

Never had a problem with unloading it in windy conditions, fortunately we have some weather helm in the design so you can always round up a bit to unload, or drop the traveler down in a pinch as a fall back option.
