I think I have the standard tiller on my '73 Catalina 27 but it seems too long to me. It feels like I could cut off 12-14 inches and it would be much better. I like to stand with the tiller at my back, especially racing. But I end up near the front of the cockpit or further back out of the way of crew with the tiller in the air trying to control it. When I single-hand it's easier: I stand at the companionway.

Anyone else struggle with this tiller? Any remedies besides wheel?

Especially when I have 3 or more guest. There is very little weather helm with the Cat 27 and a shorter tiller will work. There was an earlier post where his tiller broke. Encourage him to just round off end and finsh. He tried it and was happy with it.

I'm really tempted to cut it off. I'll probably make one, though, and change it out just to be safe. I have a bracket for the tiller pilot and socket for the extension. Both are away from the end I'd cut off.

I have taken scrap and made a little tiller that is maybe only 18-22 inches; just enough for my tiller pilot. I have comfort with it working, yet have a longer one ready to go just in case. I can't wait to try it out!
