If the windlass is an original factory or dealer installation, the solenoid control is probably in the engine compartment. On my 1997 model the windlass cables were run from the bow to the engine compartment where they were terminated. Apparently the factory intended for the windlass to be powered from the starting battery. Since my boat did not have the windlass installed (just the 2-0 cables to the bow, thank you Hunter!) I extended the cables to the cockpit aft lazarette and put my solenoid box in that location and used the house batteries for power.

I believe it is in the bow near the windlass.
You can easilly verify this. Look where the footwswitch wiring leads

This makes more sense. Less wiring, especially if the motor is a 3-wire unit.

I think artboas is right, it is probably in the bow. You can access the bow area by removing the large fiberglass panel at the front of the vee berth. If it has never been removed, you will need to cut the caulking around the edges.

My 40.5 was wired for windlass motor power (big wires) from the start battery, and a small wire for solenoid power from the house DC panel routed to the V berth area.

the system has 2 CBs, one for the big wires, one for the small wire.

Control box .

On my 89 legend 37 it is in the chain locker , just above the door where you cannot see it ,. I had to use a mirror to get it out and replace it .

windlass

OK my windlass controll box is up next to the windlass motor mounted in the bow and have access from in the vee berth.
The cables go from the windlass along the port side to my nav station where the battery selector switch/1/2/both is under the nav station on port side about the middle maybe more or less and have a breaker for windlass under the nav station next to the battery switch /1/2/both switch and windlass breaker on the main panel.
If you have any of this type setup than I would think yours is setup the same way.

My 93 40.5 Legend has a foot switch in the anchor locker and A CB at the nav station panel to control it. The windlass power wires have a CB (push button) in the engine compartment.

I just installed a "down" foot switch and a solenoid box to handle "up" and "down" . To do this I had to remove the panel in the very front of the forepeak. I glassed in a board to mount the solenoid. I purchased the solenoid and switch from an online distributor It was a lot cheaper than WM.
The previous owner had had the windlass installed with just the "up" switch. Two cables run the length of the boat to the stbd cockpit locker and my house batteries. I've enclosed a few pics.
