Good Day everyone
This is my question for today is. My mast that is 28' on my 79- 25' venture. what I want to do is make( not buy) a mast raising system. Now I have been looking at the different ones on this forum. One that was used was on a v22, and different ones on 22 footers. One of the ones I saw was made out of a 2x4 that he strapped to the mast I would say about 2' from the bottom of the mast and with a pulley system at the other end of the boom and I beleave he used the jib line to tie to the top of the boom, now my question is on my 28' mast would that hurt the mast by strapping that 2x4 to the mast about 2' up, or should I put something in front of the mast, now I do have a stainless steel bracket that is at the bottom 4/half by 4" with a hole at each corner for bolts to go through now the brackets are 3's a part out side to out side, now the bracket is 6' high on each side with a round hole that a bolt can run through. Now I could put that in front of the mast but being new I have my miss givings about drilling through the hull of my boat, I do know if I do I will need to use stainless steel bolts with a backing plate underneath. I just don't know on eather one HELP I I do not know witch one or is their a better choice? (Without buying one) BTW the PO has 5 cleats at the bottom of the mast? Any ideas why

If I were making a 2x4 wooden gin pole I would cut out the bottom to matche the front of the mast, allowing enough room to glue in a ~1/4" piece of rubber lining. This will increas the friction and prevent scratching the mast. The pole will nee to be about 10' long so that it pulls down to either the anchor cleat or the fore stay chain plate. The longer pole also gives you a mechanical advantage.

I'm sorry but I did forget one detail the one that I saw where the mast meets the gin pole
He added a peace of wood to go around the mast, you know not fully around just half way on each side with a pease of rubber to protect the mast another one strapped something around the mast to the wood to hold it from movingAnd I was just wondering with my mast being so long 28' would I hurt the mast if I put the gin pole about 2' up on the mast I do not want to bend it and can you or anyone tell me what it means BB code is on and (IMG)code is on and HTML code is off?

Tlhe closer you put it to the bottom the closer to right angle it will be when you attach the fore stay to the top of the gin pole.

I'd personally skip the awkward 2 X 4 and copy the stock setup...

...It works and is easy to store even on the boat and goes up in just a minute or so. I think BWY sells them, but an adaquate aluminum tube or piece of conduit and a couple of brackets and a block and tackle and you have a great system that works and is dependable. You might have to replace the deck plate...

...it there is no place to connect or make a different bracket that would work with what you have.

I have 2 set ups. The one Sumner shows and an "improved" system that includes a winch on the gin pole. I'm planning to set up and launch for the first time Wednsday, I'll report back on how it goes.
Of course that's all dependant on us not getting blowed away by the storms tearing up North east Oklahoma tonight.

I see you are of MDR. Do they still race coming into the harbor, I do not know what day people did this, but it seemed like it was just one day during the week that everyone went out just to come back in with all the spinners up and some like me with my main and jib out to the starboard and the port jib out one side main other but at the time it was fun for me

I like the winch on the pole it you are leaving the mast raising on shore, but for us don't think it would store as compact on the boat for a trip.

Sure hope you guys are ok there. Lots of tornadoes in that area today,

Don't forget to use baby stays. They are crucial,

Coming downwind wing on wing through the channel at the end of a sail is my favorite part of the day. I don't know of any organized race but the unspoken competitive spirit is alway present.

I just measured my plate and I beleave if I turn my plate around I can put a hole through it with a bolt and the gin pole will work just fine

As I was looking though all the posts you sent and I took a second look at your trailer and saw that it only had one axel like the one I have I like and want to put on the guides that you have and the roller at the bow none of witch I have. I'm also going to put on a sliding second hitch that I can slide out about 5 or 6 feet then hook up my SUV. Back down the ramp and launch then when come back I take her out of the water and when I'm back on level ground I slide back, unhook lock down the second hitch and re hook to my main hitch and away I go

It did have 2 bunks and ...

....one axle and no brakes. Now it has...

... an extended and reinforced frame, three bunks, two axles and surge disc brakes on the rear axle.

Are you sure you need a tongue extender? We don't have the 25, but our rear tires usually just....

..touch the water at most,

Well the ramp that I will be using is steep and I don't want to take the chance of backing down the ramp and getting my tires wet and I can't get back up the ramp

With a steeper ramp you shouldn't even be in the water as much. Isn't your SUV 4 wheel drive? I'd try what you have first and see if you are going to have a problem. Just a thought :),
